Today was a weird day, everybody is acting weird around me. I just went home this morning, from university, for spring break and my family is just acting like they were not happy to see me... Or maybe they are hiding something from me. Also, my wolf is abnormally quiet and this is never a good sign. All on this was so annoying that I’ve decided to go for a run.

I’m a hybrid half-witch form my mother and half-werewolf from my father, and this is pretty cool. I love been a wolf as much as I love doing magic. Well, my father is a Lycan. King Anton turned him when I was 5. Lycans are the stronger supernatural creatures. They reappeared a few years ago. The first one was Anna-Lynn and she became our Queen, 21 years ago. She is mated with Anton who became our King on the occasion. Lycans can choose their mate, the Moon Goddess is not involved in the process, it’s their instincts who guided them toward the right one. The person - they chose as their mate - will become a Lycan too as soon as they are marked. Yet, my mother, who is bearing my father’s mark, is still a witch as she blocked the Lycan poison in her blood. My mother is a very very powerful witch which is why she was able to do that.

Anyway, I feel more relaxed after my run. When I arrive back at home, my brother, Fynn and my sister Lyla are waiting outside the house. They are not talking as they normally do. Fynn will be 21 in a few days and Lila is 20. Lila and Fynn only have 11 months apart and are very close to each other. I’m the older one and I’m 25 now and I used to be closed with my cousin Tom but after the death of his mate, we felt apart. He is a really close off person now.

“What are you doing outside?” I ask them, coming outside of the woods.

“There is an emergency meeting and we are too young to be involved.” Lila replies frustrated.

“As someone was spying, we were thrown out.” Fynn adds annoyed.

I nod: “ And what is about?”

They both look away not wanted to tell me. Why?

“I’m waiting!” I add feeling annoyed too.

“It’s about your mate.” Fynn says looking his feet.

“What mate?” I ask even if I have an idea.

You see I have two mates. A lot of my friends think I’m lucky but for me, it’s a curse. I have a mate that the moon goddess destined to me and I have a Lycan’s mate. My Lycan’s mate is my perfect match but I have to give up everything my wolf and my magic and in the other, I have my “wolf-mate” that we never fit me perfectly but I can stay myself. And in every way, someone will be hurt in the end. It’s just a curse that I try to avoid at all costs. Selina, my Lycan’s mate is the crown princess, and accepting her will cost me too much. I didn’t find yet my Wolf-mate and I hope to keep it like that... For now at least.

“Selina.” He answers and makes come back to reality.

“She is no-“ I say

“Ex-mate.” Lila cuts me.

“I did not reject her.” I tell her.

“You were about to say she is not you mate.”

“Still I didn’t reject her.”

“Are you sure about that?” She defies me.

“You kind of did, bro.” Fynn says.

“And when did I do that?” I ask them even more annoyed than before.

“When you went to her birthday party with one of your girlfriends.” He replies with air quotes the word girlfriends.

“I never did that! I wasn’t even invited to the last one.” I protest.

“It was 2 years and a half ago for her eighteen birthday. This is why you will never be invited again for her birthday.” Lila says.

“This is bullshit!” I say entering the house to see what’s really going on.

Something is off I can feel it. In my father’s office, people are having an animated discussion. I close my eyes and focus on my earring.

“How can you say that?” A man roars.

“Calm down, my soul. This is not helping.” A woman says.

“You can’t deny she has changed since... the ball.” My father replies.

“You mean since your son broke my little girl’s heart.” The man says aggressively.

King Anton. Then the woman is Queen Anna-Lynn, aka my mate’s mother, aka my godmother.

“Anton, please! We don’t have time for that now.” Anna-Lynn says.

“ You can’t deny she has changed since Noah’s rejection. It’s not the first time she attacks someone without any reason. She even attacked his cousin Alexis with no reason.” My father says.

“Al, I know my daughter. She is not like that.” Anna-Lynn.

“Still she is not as she used to be. She became so secretive.” My mother.

“Maybe because you’re Noah’s mother. Nevermind we are losing tome here. We will found someone else to help us. Let’s go sweet cheeks.”Anton says.

We meet in the living room.

“What’s going?” I asked them.

“Nothing you need to worry about.” Anton says dryly.

“What is going with Selina?” I ask.

“None of your business.” Anton replies.

“My soul, please? Hey Noah. It has been a while.” Anna-Lynn smiles but it doesn’t reach the sadness in her eyes.

“Hey Auntie Lilly, maybe I can help?” I tell her.

My mother sighs and says: “ Selina was arrested for the murder of Oleg Gustov, the right hand of the crown Prince Nicolaï. She is locked in their dungeon. King Leopold already announced that any rescue mission will be an act of war against the Vampire Kingdom.”

“So what you are going to leave her there?!” I ask. I can feel my anger reinforced by my wolf’s furry.

“This is big, thousands of human beings would die.” My father says.

“So?”

When he and my mother say nothing, I turn towards Anna-Lynn and Anton.

“Selina is in trouble! We need to help.” My wolf says and he is totally right.

“I will help you! I don’t care about the coming war!”
