Brecken Wood

I awoke to a bright ray of light crashing through the window, and it almost made me lay back down. However, I knew that if I did not get up I would risk being discovered by whoever owns this house, because no house this pristine would be left abandoned and I did not want to risk getting caught by the king’s men.

As soon as the sun was three quarters into the sky I put my remaining food in my backpack, as well as the box of my mother’s things. I put my denim jacket on, which is two sizes too small, French braided my silky blonde hair and threw it over my shoulder. I then proceeded to make my way out of the house where I had spent the night and left through the back door.

I had almost made it to Brecken Wood when I heard tyres on the dusty road about 12 meters away from where I was standing, and the only people who could afford motor vehicles around this area would be someone working for the king. I quickly ducked into a massive thorn bush and prayed they would keep going and not stop to look in this area for powers and as it was only just day break I’m hoping that they are just passing through.

I waited for around 5 minutes before I was sure they had passed without stopping, once I was sure I carefully crept out from the thorn bush and pulled out the few thorns that had managed to stick themselves into my skin. The pain though was hardy existent, in my 16 years alive I have felt much, much worse pain, than anything a little thorn could do. I made sure my backpack was securely on my back and made my way into Brecken Wood. Brecken Wood was the one place the Kings men had not looked through yet. There could be quite a few reasons for that, it could be the large surface area Brecken Wood possessed, or it could be that fact that hardly anyone alive and that lived in the towns had been through it and survived. This however does not faze me in the slightest, I know that the people who walked through here and died were probably human and the rest probably decided to stay, away from the darkness that King has brought upon Raiaden and its people.

I had been walking for around 2 hours when I heard a growl of sorts coming from the east west. I walked warily, careful not to make any sudden noise. Something or someone rushed about in the trees, less than a metre away from me. I took a few moments to determine what I should do next. I could use my gift but then the king’s men would be able to tell where I was, and that was something I did not want to happen. The other option would be to throw my knives at it and hope for the best. I have not been doing this for a while, well okay maybe I have but that is only because it was necessary to fight off and kept the king’s men away and there may be some other reasons as well.

Slowly I pulled one of my knives out of my left boot and aimed it at where I expected the creature to move too next. Then in one swift motion I let go. I heard an animalistic whimper, meaning I had hit the creature. As I walked closer to where I thought I hit the creature I felt as if someone was watching me. At first, I ignored it and carried on towards the creature. The creature had dark brown fur, four legs with extremely sharp claws, big ears, you would probably think it was a bear or a normal bear. However, it was a Lysen. Lysen can change the colour of their fur to stop prey from running away scared. And right in front of me my knife was lodged in the dead Lysen’s throat. I walked up to the creature and pulled my knife.

When I turned my back away from the creature I swore I felt someone watching me again. Then suddenly someone jumped down from the tree. The girl in front of me was probably around my age, with blood red straight chin length hair, light grey eyes, pale skin and she was holding a bow and arrow. All I could do was stare at her, I was most defiantly not expecting to see another person this soon.

Trying to be civil I put my hand out for her to shake. “Hi, my names Alex what’s yours.”

“I’m Kyra” She briskly replied. I had no idea how, but I could tell she was a power, and a strong one at that. “Kyra, you’re a power aren’t you.” She hesitantly nodded her head.

“What’s your signature colour, Kyra”. She just continued to stare at me.

“Kyra, I don’t want to hurt you, I’m a power too” I could tell by the look she was giving me that she did not believe one bit. I thought about what I could do to prove to her that he wasn’t lying. I decided to do a simple casting one that would be too small for anybody else to notice. I concentrated hard and imaged a small rush coming up through the earth in front of me and Kyra.

When I opened my eyes, a simple purple rose bush was in front of me. “Is this proof enough for you.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you, you just have to be so careful.”

“I know that Kyra.” I looked at her and she genuinely smiled at me. Without realising I had just given away my signature colour. Most signature colours are green, yellow and orange and by most, I mean everybody who is a power has those colours unless they are one of four special people then they will have either blue, red, pink or purple by special people I mean four people every one hundred years are giving those signature colours and they are meant to guard the kingdom from danger, and me being me just gave away that mine was purple. Although I knew I could trust her just by looking in her glistening grey eyes.

“would you like to see mine” she asked while stepping closer to me. I nodded my head with a kind smile. She walked over to a small budding tulip near the base of a nearby tree. As she was concentrating on her casting I could see a blue mist surrounding the tulip. Which could only mean one thing her signature colour was blue. Once she was finished in the place of the yellow tulip that had once been there was a blue tulip. A beautiful blue tulip. I could not stop the gasp from escaping my lips. She was one of the four as well. That would explain why her reaction to my signature colour was not as big as I was expecting it to be.

When she was looking at me again a small smile was place upon her face and I couldn’t help but return it. “Alex”

“What Kyra are you okay.”

“Yes, but” she looked up at the sky “I think a storm is coming”

I looked around I had only just noticed that there were no small animals anywhere. There was a storm coming and a big one at that. “We need to find somewhere to ride out the storm” I looked over to her to see her response.

She responded “we can go to my hideout” “the other two girls are there” without waiting for my response she ran off and I followed her. I followed her to a small cave, which had lots of room.

Inside the cave like she had said were two more girls one with curly chestnut hair that went down to her chest, deep brown eyes, freckles all over her nose and dark tan skin. Sitting next to her was a girl with straight black hair, bright emerald eyes and light porcelain skin. Well it looked like porcelain to me. The girl with the black hair walks up to me with her hands on her hips. “My name’s Meya and that’s Cayanna” She then walked even closer. “who are you are what are you doing here”.

This looks like an interesting idea so far! There are a few grammar mistakes, but other than that, the plot seems to be very unique and interesting 👍
