Cask of Amontillado Poem

*The Cask of Amontillado is a short story written by Edgar Allen Poe. I have written a poem about a possible alternate ending after the story.*

And you’ll know what it is in the end

When I take you apart, friend.

My benevolence has gone

You won’t be alive by dawn

You will get what you deserve

Can’t you see that?

I’m a monster.

But I’m not.

And it’s your fault.

Can’t you see that, you idiot?

And maybe I’ll forget,

The sweat be off my neck

But if it doesn’t, what then?

We’ll both die, time and again;

Tired and weary, I waited

While you were extolled

I hated it;

Soon it got old

Your grimace of pain

Matched your body and your chains

Impervious, the brick wall stood

You had a glimpse of hope; falsehood

A quintessential form of revenge

From your wrong I have avenged

Though now,

I am in jeopardy

I will take whatever be

Though confession may grant sweet relief

I have been the greatest thief

Shameful, I led on to jury

Nothing could subdue their fury

Hang by your neck until you are dead

Was the verdict that was said

A death for a death, fair in terms

What the jury then confirms

Hateful, I was lead to the stocks

With nothing but you on my mind

It is your fault

That i am now dead

Fortunato, from Montresor,

Your friend.

mariedavismd312: This was Avery spiritual read. The last 2 chapters where very disappointing. That was such a let down unless there is a sequel. Burgess should have been punished for what he did. There was no explanation for his hatred for Jeremiah. I figured he was being set but just had the wrong person. I loved ...
