Chapter 2: The Witching

Hours pasted and Axel had finally finished her herbal potion and was about to work on her next, but Cackle has something else in mind. Suddenly Cackle started knocking herbs and bottles down.

0

“Cackle!!! Knock. It. Off!!!” Screamed Axel at Cackle.

0

“No, I got stuck with the runt of the litter, yet I was the most powerful!” Rebuttaled Cackle.

0

“...” Axel remained silent as she began to pick up her herbs and bottles.

0

“Did I upset the poor wittle witch? Are youw feewing huwt? Ha!” Cackle responded teasingly.

0

“Leave it alone Cackle, let me work.” Axel said distantly.

0

Cackle her cat of all things brought her back to a time she desperately wanted to forget. Grade school. The worst years of her life. During grade school she was constantly picked on by upperclassmen and anyone better than her. She had no friends and nobody liked her, they would constantly say things like Cackle did. The whole reason: She was cursed, cursed to live with a ghoul or ghost - she hasn’t found out yet - one that only witches could see.

0

From birth was when she was cursed. Her mother didn’t know what to do about it and put her for adoption, not wanting to deal with the responsibility of a cursed child. Because of this Axel never knew about her mother, the only thing she had about her was a half of heart necklace. It was a clasp, but it was locked shut with a spell. Axel has tried to unlock it, but she assumes it is spelled shut. Soon she might find the truth, and what is in the clasp.

0

Once she turned 3 she was adopted by an elderly couple - both were witches who have dealt with curses - but once she turned 14 they both passed of her curse. Axel blamed and still blames herself for what happened, even though it wasn’t her fault.

0

“Axel, are you okay?” Asked Cackle.

0

“Ya, yea I’m fine, I’m fine...” Axel trailed off.

Kritta_820: I enjoyed the storyline immensely and felt that it devolved from the average "small puny female wolf finds a royal mate." Sometimes the jumps between scenes and plots jumped ahead a little too far for my taste. For example when MC heard the update about her first mate the book suddenly changed to th...

Cynical Optimist : You can never go wrong with a B. E. Harmel story. The plot is intriguing and the protagonists are mature and sensible.I was a little disappointed with the stylized writing. Harmel, a gifted storyteller easily draws the reader in by creating characters thatbwe can connect with emotionally. Hwre, she...

AS: The writing here is clean, polished, and flows so naturally that it was a real pleasure to read.Isla is a great protagonist. Her self-deprecating humor made her feel real (the squirrel's tail and the upside-down trees in the epilogue had me laughing), and her skills as a healer and her growth into h...
