Chapter 1

“We can no longer stand by!” Dr. Rosa said, standing up and pounding her fist on the table. “We must take action!”

“But what action?” Dr. Florence argued. “How can we cure a virus that is not supposed to occur for years? A virus that we have no control over?”

This sent the conference room into chaos, with everyone muttering and arguing with one another. Nobody could seem to agree.

“Enough!” Their leader said. “Why don’t we figure out how to stop this virus.”

Dr. Rosa and Dr. Florence grumbled and nodded, sitting back down in their chairs. The leader looked at everyone, as if daring them to even think about objecting.

“Anyway,” the leader said, “what do we know about this virus?”

A woman stood up and cleared her throat. “The virus seems to start at where ever it was transferred to. Then it goes through the bloodstream, killing a few blood cells but also leaves some there. It courses throughout the body and then, once it has taken over all of it, then it kills the infected slowly. The rate of the virus may vary.”

“Oh my god,” a man mumbled. “How many cases?”

“We don’t know.”

“Is it contagious?”

“We don’t know that either.”

“What do you know?!” The leader spat. “We need to get info on this virus before people die!”

“Well, sir, the portable time machine has been perfected,” a scientist offered. “We could send it back into time to the very first case and they can find a way to stop it.”

“But sir...” Dr. Florence began.

The leader slammed his fist on the table. “No buts. This plan just might work. Now let’s go!” Many scientists rushed around, preparing for it.

“Sir we may cease to exits if we change the past!” A man protested.

“Who cares?” The leader asked. “If it saves people’s lives, we will do it. Go ahead with your preparations.”

“I’d advice to send it further back in time,” Dr. Rosa said. “So it is more of a family heirloom instead of a random medallion.”

The leader nodded. “Make it so.”

The scientists and some council members left to prepare. Dr Florence and Dr. Rosa stayed behind.

“I hope this works,” Dr Florence said.

“It will,” Dr Rosa said confidently.

The all got up and went to the observation lounge, where there was a wall of glass, revealing a large room where a time portal had been opened. A man took two medallions and went in it, coming back almost instantly with one of them. The man went up to the lounge to meet the three.

“It worked,” the man said.

“I hope so,” Dr. Florence muttered. “We all depend on it.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
