"There's a few more up there if you wanna run up and go get them Kor." My dad stated, putting another cardboard box into the back of my Jeep. I had received it as a gift on my 17th birthday.
"Alright." I said running back inside, up to the room I had grown up in. My sister, March, was picking up one of my bags before turning and looking at me.
"You excited?" She asked, smiling.
"A little." I told her. Picking up the cardboard box labeled Memories. It was full of pictures of my family and friends from younger years. I was definitely going to miss all of this.
"Here let me grab another one." She picked up a box labeled Electros before turning to me and nodding her head, signaling me to come with her.
I turned to look at the room once more before it became another memory. Yes, it would always be here and yes, I could always come back. But it wouldn't be the same. This was the last time I would be living here. That this bedroom would be mine, and not just in my parents home. I sighed knowing I'm probably over thinking and made my way down to the car following March.
As we placed the boxes into the back I closed it taking in a deep breath. I felt an arm on my head making my neck bend.
"Atlis-" I remarked annoyed at the brother who towered over me.
"You'll be fine. I'm at MIT anyway. If you need me, call. I'll come." He said I'm an attempt to calm my nerves.
"That's a three hour drive, At, plus you're graduating this year. Don't be blaming me when you don't get your degree." He was studying to be a Medical Engineer. Said he was going to change the face of Medicine.
He just sighed before going over to March to hug her goodbye before I was bombarded with a crying mother and Sorrowful father. My mom hugged me tight while tears slipped out of her eyes.
"Be safe, okay? And- and call and text as much as you can. FaceTimes too! And don't forget us at all!! And make sure you come home for holidays with your brother. OH! And write me letters. I just. I just want to know everything that's going on." She said, taking my face into her hands. "My baby" she said smiling .
"I'm the youngest." March opposed. We all let out small laughed before my dad took my attention away.
"Call us as soon as you get there. Okay? And stay focused. But do clubs. And don't stay out all night but have fun. Don't be afraid to go to parties. I just want you to enjoy yourself."
He smiled genuinely at me.
"I promise I'll call, and stay focused, and do extra curriculars, and get sleep, and have fun. Okay? I'm 18 now guys. I'm a big girl. I can handle this. I love you guys." I engulfed them both in a hug before heading into Marches direction.
"You aren't getting my room. If I come back and your stuff is plastered all over it I'll make sure you don't get to leave for college." I smiled at her after I spoke and so did she. She pulled me into a side hug before telling me how she would miss me and how she loved me.
Atlis and I made our way to the car. He got in the drivers seat and I in the passengers. I told my whole family I loved them and so did he. They said it back. March and my mom both had tears in their eyes which was heart wrenching to see but I knew they were sad that was leaving, but happy I was going somewhere to do something good.
As Atlis drove away I took one last look at the house I had once grown up in. The house where I broke my arm in the 8th grade with my friend Natalie. Or where March did her first flip on a trampoline when she was 10. The memories almost radiated off the house. That feeling of forever knowing this place as home would soon dull away. It would still be there, but not strongly.
Atlis turned up the radio to drown out the thoughts he knew I was thinking. Bubble Gum by Clairo was on. This wasn't helping. I sighed knowing that I should be enjoying this. Going off to college. But I knew part of me would always be here.
***
We had pulled up to the school around 4 o'clock. My mother insisted we leave earlier so I wouldn't be unpacking that night.
We went to the table and got my room number and key before heading towards it. This was it, the start of my college experience. It was on the second floor which meant we would most likely be dealing with noises from upstairs. But it wasn't that far of a walk from the door so it was reasonable.
I finally reached the room to see the numbers 214 plastered on the front in a shiny, gold like, metal. I turned the knob to see if it was unlocked and it was. I opened it further to see the room itself. I saw one bed, against the left wall and the other again the back. Both positioned under windows. The one on the left was decorated with stars and galaxy like things. Next to each bed was a dresser. One black and one white. The dresser to the left held candles and a jewelry holder with the sign of Olympian's on it. The bed against the back wall was undecorated. That would be where my stuff would go.
Atlis and I made my way over to the bed before hearing a door opened and gasp. I turned to see a girl standing. She was wearing a white tank top with black colored jeans. Her hair was blonde with tints of red in it. She smiled in my direction before engulfing me into a hug.
"You must be my roomie." She smiled sweetly.
"Yeah, I'm Kora. Most people call me Kor though." I said.
"I'm Iris. But you can call me Eye, Ris, R, Is, Ir, or Iris." She said brightly.
I giggled at this before realizing her name was a Goddess.
"This is my brother, Atlis. He's gonna help me move in. He attends MIT so he will probably be visiting occasionally if that's okay?" I asked. She simply nodded kindly before making her way over to her bed.
"I can help. With getting all your stuff. If you'd want?" She offered. I happily agreed before putting the box I had carried up down. Atlis followed my actions before turning to go back down to the car.
This was happening, this is college.
