Chapter 1

PREFACE

My name is Joseph Sutton. I was once known as Violet-Freeze. Right now, I’m what you call a ‘supreme possessor,’ as I’ve already passed into the third and final stage of my power. Before, I was able to create the illusion of purple ice with my mind. Now the illusions are no longer illusions, but rather a real, natural element that I can easily materialize with this power. Today I’m known as the Crystal Unicorn. I am one of a three-man team called the Supreme Trinity. With me is my brother Nick (the Searing Dragon) and my cousin David (the Plasmatic Knight.) As a small vigilante squad, we prowl the skies and rooftops of our towns and neighborhoods, watching, protecting, and keeping our streets as safe as we can. We go out only at night, and for the most part try to remain unseen. It was a surprise to us how busy we’ve become. We never expected to encounter as many crimes as we had. When you’re out as much as we are, surveying the domestic terrain, you learn what areas are the most problematic, and even though your neighborhood seems safe, that may very well be an illusion itself.

So far, the Supreme Trinity has hindered a score of backstreet muggings and home invasions, halted vehicles trying to evade police, and even foiled a couple of attempted bank robberies. As a result, people had started to become aware of our presence. Even though there are many out there with similar abilities, we are seemingly the only ones using our supreme powers to build a heroic reputation. Our ways continue to this day.

Jade-Rain flew through the night sky like a silent eagle, his eyes burning green and the wind beating against his face and jacket. On the rooftop of a local bar, a man with glowing red eyes watched him approach. He stood patiently on the roof, waiting for his friend to arrive, satisfied by his punctuality. Jade-Rain spotted the red eyes, and then dropped lower, where he made a soft landing on the tavern’s top edge.

“I hear you call yourself Blood, huh Mike?” Asked Jade.

Blood nodded. “As a red water possessor, I think it fits.”

“Of course. Water is my element as well.”

“One of the few things we have in common. So, Lloyd, you have the information I want?”

“About Nick Sutton?”

Blood glared, his red eyes squinting. “That’s right.”

“What do you want to know about him?”

“Well, you see, he’s the one who gave me my powers. Not sure if that was his intention when he shot that fireball at me, but alas, I’ve become like him now. I simply want to know where to find him, so I can... thank him... for these remarkable abilities.”

“Don’t think I quite believe that.” Jade-Rain confessed. “Nick and I use to be friends, and I know how you two didn’t get along.”

“We barely knew eachother before all this, and it’s not too late to make peace.”

“You know what he’s capable of, Mike. He’s a supreme! You haven’t evolved to that level yet. And don’t give me that “I want to make peace” bullshit. You’ve wanted to confront him ever since I told you he was the Searing Dragon, which I regret doing.”

Agitation rose in Blood. “What do you care anyway? It’s not like you two are friends anymore. You screwed that up.”

Jade-Rain sighed, letting Mike’s words slide. “The Supreme Trinity have become near-celebrities around these parts. From here to Detroit, all of Southeast Michigan knows about them. Judging by their reputation, I don’t think picking a fight with them is the best idea.”

“I’m not afraid of those freaks.”

“Maybe you should be.” Jade-Rain turned away, and then stepped to the edge of the rooftop, gazing upon the night-lit neighborhood. “Tell me something, Mike.”

“Call me Blood.”

“Does this have anything to do with Holly?”

His red eyes stared at him a moment. “Why you ask that?”

Jade-Rain nodded. “Her and Nick are pretty serious these days, aren’t they?”

Blood didn’t reply.

“I know you always liked her, Mike... Blood. And now that she’s with Nick, I’m guessing a little jealousy fuels your intentions?”

Blood smirked, shaking his head.

“She calls herself Sapphire, now that she’s one of us.” Jade continued. “But she isn’t a supreme either. Not yet. Try to get over her. You were always too... unfit to be with a girl like that.”

A wave of telekinesis slammed into Jade-Rain, and he flung off the edge of the tavern, catching himself in mid-air.

“What the hell!” Jade yelled as he floated back over the roof, preparing to summon his water power in defense.

“Spare me the lectures, and tell me where to find the Searing Dragon!”

They glared at each other for a moment. “Fine then,” Jade-Rain finally complied, “I won’t tell you where he lives, but I do know of a place he goes sometimes. All three of them go there.”

“Where?”

“It’s this old, nearly torn down brick structure. It’s located on Hall Rd and Tilch, near the Beaumont hospital, hidden within a large patch of woods. They go there for solitude, mainly at night. They used to meet up atop a church on 21 Mile and Romeo Plank, but they don’t go there anymore.”

Blood grinned, satisfied. “How did you find all this out?”

“I was curious. Nick, Joe and David have the exact same powers as the Supreme Trinity, so I’ve been keeping secret tabs on the three for a while, to see if was true, and it is. They are the Trinity.”

Jade-Rain turned away from Blood, thinking to himself for a moment. He then said, “I still think whatever you’re planning is a bad idea, just don’t say I didn’t warn your stubborn ass.”

He turned back around, and found that Blood had vanished.
