Mysterious Presence

Amelia's POV

Sarah and I grew up together, we were inseparable doing everything from scraping knees and going to summer camp, which we later worked at...However, I didn’t see this boyfriend of hers coming at all..Don’t get me wrong, sure we dated guys but He was different, darker the bad boy of our neighborhood. I was helpless to stop her even earlier today in our fight, which I didn’t know would be our last.. I warned her she ignored me getting in his car, All I remember was that numbing phone call I received from her mom letting me know what had happened, her mom's voice beginning to tunnel in my head was an accident they said, couldn’t have been prevented they said.

Left to pick up the pieces of my friendship, I call our old boss in my grief, he became family long ago and explain what happened. Saying I would gladly have a spot on staff this year, packing all I can I drive to my safe haven I called my second home to be closer to Sarah again. I Arrived late and the cabin was already unlocked for me I unload my stuff I sigh in relief I head to the dock like we used to.

The moonlit night seems ever brighter with the calm surface of the water, not a ripple. I decided to sit on the edge of the dock. It was half past midnight, I believe, though I didn’t care. Wondering about the mysteries hidden beneath the surface seemed more interesting. Reaching to touch the treacherously calm water, I did not realize that the chaos underneath would try to consume me.

Suddenly the surface broke. I wasn’t the least bit scared, but maybe a little curious. A scaly webbed hand emerged and grasped my own.

What the…? I thought, now scared. I was abruptly dragged into the murky cold world below.

I can’t see anything… A silhouette, maybe... I don’t know. All I knew that it was cold…

My vision is clouded, but slowly focuses. I didn't notice it looking just as curious at me as im now.

IT’S A FREAKING MAN... I think?! I am exhilarated. Seems friendly enough. He has scales around his jaw and down his neck, joining his well-defined abdomen where it turns to multiple tentacles. His face is curious and gentle with full lips, high cheekbones, and a defined jaw. His eyes appear light coloured and his hair is inky black… but that might just be the lack of light.

He’s certainly staring. Hope I don’t look as weird as I feel… How long have I been under, too? I don’t seem to require air… Weird. Maybe he’s magical, being a mythical creature and all…

I reach out to him, but I must have scared him, for he’s gone in a flurry. Man, he moves fast. Swimming back to the surface, I get out.

“Freaking great… It's freezing. What a jerk…” Frustrated, I head back to the camp. The cabin seems like the best course of action considering my state, though I cannot stop thinking about what just happened. Like, was it a hallucination, or was it real? Unlocking the cabin, I give my head a shake. It was just a hallucination, Amelia. Be realistic. It was a breakdown.

It was understandable since my best friend’s accident. Dreaming of a super hot fictional creature was my brain’s way of coping. Drying off, I start to climb into bed.

Maybe I just need sleep.

Settling down was easier than I thought. Before I knew it, I was…
