Chapter 1
Chapter 1
CRASH!!
"SCRAM, KID!!!"
My heart beats faster and faster as I'm running back to my 'home', away from the dumpster of a dark alleyway. Damn it! All I wanted was some food. I don't stop running till I get to the moldy, old, run-down, cardboard, box. In another, you guessed it, alleyway. My 'home'.
I collapse into the small, cramped box, starving. Only wishing I had some scraps this morning. I curl up in a ball trying to gather up some warmth. "Achoo!" I sniffle and whimper, only wanting food and warmth.
Maybe I could go to the local store with what little money I have left? What is it, four bucks. I slowly get up and throw the hood of my hoodie up over my head and head towards the store. As I'm walking I step in a puddle getting my used shoes soaked.
I giggle and stomp in the remaining water again. Someone coughs and I look up and frown and continue on walking to the store. I hate it when people frown upon the way 'we' act simply because they think 'we' are homeless.
I enter the store and head for the veggie aisle, keeping my head down not wishing to be criticized because of my appearance. I look up only to come to see and smell some delicious Celery. I smile and grab two sticks. I look at the price, it's .99 cents per lb(s). I place the celery in a plastic bag and place it on the weigher thingy.
.29 lbs
I smile and do a little dance in the aisle, happy because this means I get to eat tonight. I pick the bag of celery back up and head on over to the checkout lane. When I get there I smile up at the nice old lady, named Marie-Anne. "Hi, Miss, Anne!" I say smiling wide.
Miss Anne smiles right back, "Hi Little Bethany, how are you tonight?" I place the bag on the lane thingy responding with, "I'm okay Miss Anne...I get to eat tonight, so that's a plus." Anne frowns but quickly smiles again, "Bethany, sweetie, put the money up. It's on the house ." Anne says while holding up her hand in a stopping motion.
I try to protest but Miss Anne always gets what she wants. I stuff the money back in my pocket and smile big, "Thank you, Thank you so much, Miss Anne!!! I can't thank you enough." She just smiles and hands me the bag of celery. "You are very welcome, my sweet girl."
I blush and giggle saying thank you one last time, then walking out of the store. I open the bag and start to chew on one of the celery pieces, walking where ever the world takes me. I end up at a club? The bouncer there reminds me of a 'friend', Madox. Madox helps me out sometimes when I don't have enough money to get some food for the day.
He's about 37. Wait! that is Madox!!! I smile and walk over to Madox and take a small bite of the celery stick. "Maddie!" I giggle and wave over to him. He lets the last person in, as of right now and turns to me. Madox smiles lightly while saying, "Hello, Bethany. How are you, hun?" When I get over to him I smile.
"I'm okay now, I have dinner tonight Maddie!" I giggle out. Madox chuckles and messes up my hair. "That's great kiddo, did Anne help ya out tonight?" I nod my head and take another bite. Madox nods and hands me a piece of candy? Ooo, it's chocolate!!!
I smile wide and quickly hug the boncer, telling him, thank you over and over again. He just pats my head, "You're welcome kiddo. Now off, please. Can't have ya messing up my job." I giggle letting go of Madox.
"What is a filthy piece of trash doin' over here? Huh? Shoo, Shoo. You are NOT welcome here."
I turn to look over to the voice whom I hear speak. Once I do I sniffle and frown, not feeling happy nor in the mood to eat anymore. I look down at my feet wiping my eyes nodding slowly. Why do people have to judge me? What did I do wrong?
"I will go get the owner if you don't leave now you leach!"
I look up at Madox with tears running down my face waiting for him to tell me off as well. But all I see is Madox telling the woman that she'll just have to get the owner because I'm not doing anything wrong. The woman storms off, probably to get the owner.
I smile up at him with puffy eyes. Madox smile lightly mumbling something like, "Don't mess with the princess." I giggle softly and look back down at my feet not noticing that I am bouncing on the heels of my feet. The bouncer smiles and chuckles lightly.
Just as I thought this night couldn't get any worse, it does. A tall, strong, handsome, man comes out the door looking pissed, with the woman from earlier not far off his tail. I pout and look down at my feet again. "Madox, what is the Girl doing here?" He states clearly pissed off.
Madox frowns slightly but not saying anything to the man. The man resumes speaking, "Go on shoo, now." I let a tear slip while dropping the now-forgotten celery and chocolate running away crying and nodding. My mood now ruined.
When I get to my box, I have fallen about twice and am now bleeding slightly. I fall to my knees and try to cover myself up under the small used blanket. I whimper and wine while crying, curling up into a ball. Crying myself to sleep. Oh, what a horrible night!
