PROLOGUE
(Six year old Sloane)
The heavy kitchen door entirely concealed me from sight. Mom was pacing from the kitchen to the living room. I only see her briefly each time she passes and turns back around. Her hands frantically digging at her hair. My pursuit of the cookie jar was quickly forgotten seeing my mom so distraught. My mom wasn’t a cryer. She skinned her knee earlier today when we played outside and didn’t even cry.
Mom suddenly stops going straight as a stick. She wipes away her tears and turns to face whoever is here. “Mom… dad… no …I. No Sloane and what’s best for her comes first. I’m sorry but I won’t help you.” Her voice stammers from emotion but she finds her footing and speaks with authority.
“YOU’LL BE DEAD TO US! YOU HEAR?! IF YOU TURN YOUR BACK ON US AGAIN. ON YOUR SISTER AGAIN! WITH GOD AS MY WITNESS! YOU’LL BE A STRANGER TO US! … No longer welcome in my home. You wanted to keep IT… I tried to understand. Love you regardless. But this… Meredith May Walsh I mean.” Grandpa George yells at mom from the living room.
I feel the tears begin to stream down my cheeks and drop from my chin. Grandpa George and Grandma Eli have never liked me much. George is always busy with his congregation. Eli makes no secret that she loves her choir group more than anything. Mom is always forcing me to try new things to impress them when they are around. “IT!? My daughter, YOUR granddaughter is not an it! Some man of god you are! Turn your back from your living breathing family to Harbor anger for the one dead one! She's dead dad. Nothing we can do for her. But Sloane, she needs us. You too. Dad PLEASE…”
Mom's makeup is all messed up and her breathing so frantic you can hear her gulping down air trying to regain control. Her normal big beautiful blond curls are all strewn about.Grandpa George huffs a mocking laugh. “No Meredith, she's HIS daughter. If she didn’t exist he would be..”
Mom is yelling back at him but I don’t hear anything. My dad didn’t want me. I was the reason he was gone. It’s MY fault grandma and grandpa are angry at mom. It’s my FAULT mom is crying.
