Chapter 1

Hi. My name’s Zoe. I am a normal sixteen year old teenager who goes to Brooks Autumn High. It’s near my house so obviously I can easily get there in like about five minutes. And I mean literally five minutes! Anyway, today is the first day of February and ugh - the first day back to school. But let me explain what really happened to me on that day. So this morning, I woke up just like a normal day, had messy hair, I looked at my watch and - wait! Is it 8:30 in the morning?!! Have I been sleeping in again? Oh - my - GOD!!! I can’t be late! No! Not on my first day back to high school! I was so shocked that I quickly ran into the bathroom, washed my light brown hair, brushed my teeth, wore my tidy uniform and raced to breakfast as fast as I could before mum notices I’ve been sleeping in again and saying, “Zoe! Get up this instant and go straight into the kitchen to eat breakfast! I don’t want my big girl to be sleeping in again!” I quickly rushed to the table to see what I have for breakfast. Oh, great. Egg and sausages again. Even though I hate egg and sausages, I still had to stuff them all in my mouth as quick as I could because when I was about to slowly eat breakfast this morning, I nearly forgot that I was in a great big rush to school. Once I was finished, I checked the time. OH - NO. 8:50?!! Now this definitely cannot be great. In fact, it’s worse than great! It’s - it’s - A CATASTROPHE!!! I rushed to the entrance of my house to put on my black shoes and white leggings. The only problem is (and to those reading, you could freak out), I cannot even tie my shoelaces! Now I’m in a STICKY SITUATION! First, I slept in, second, my breakfast almost gotten me into trouble and now this. TODAY IS ALREADY GETTING WORSE!!! I wasted like about thirty minutes of my time by now. I - AM - DEAD. Finally, with no hope of tying my shoelaces, I decided to ignore them. And guess what? Yep. You guessed right. Of course, I did. I opened the door and raced outside, saying goodbye to my mum and slammed the door behind me. I rushed to Brooks Autumn High, teeth chattering, adrenaline racing through my chest and heart pounding inside of my body. My heart was thumping when I finally arrived. I looked at my watch to look at the time. Oof. 9:05. My teacher is going to kill me. Oh, well. I guess this is it. I rushed into the main hall of the school building, grabbed my books and raced to science class. I slowly and nervously opened the door to my classroom and all of a sudden, all of the students - even the teacher stared at me for a while. Then, I noticed that the teacher was glaring at me like she was about to explode or something like that. But right now, all that I know is that I was late. “You’re late again, Miss Grey!” the teacher shouted at me. “I - I’m sorry. I - I can explain - ” “ENOUGH, MISS GREY! SIT WITH THE BOYS! I WILL HOLD A MEETING WITH YOUR PARENTS THIS AFTERNOON SAYING THAT YOU’VE BEEN LATE AGAIN! I MIGHT EVEN HAVE A WORD WITH THE PRINCIPAL IF I WANT!” Oh darn it. I guess I got caught. And now I have to sit next to these random boys. Ugh. Not my typical type. “Now, class. Since Zoe has gotten us into a fuss, let’s begin with the real work without her.” Hearing this made me feel hot angry tears pouring down my face. If it’s a bad experiment, that’s fine, I thought. But if it’s one like - “Chemistry mixing!” the teacher called out. WHAT?!! NO!!! I really want to do this experiment ever since I was three! Oh, come on! As my classmates grabbed the chemicals and mixed them, I raced to the teacher. “Excuse me, miss. But can I use the bathroom?” I asked her solemnly. “Of course, Miss Grey. But make it quick or I will send you to the principal’s office immediately!” I thanked her and rushed into the girl’s bathroom. I looked into the mirror and tears started to pour down my face. Was I unpopular just for that? I thought. Oh, well. This is it. The worst day of my life has begun. I continued crying sarcastically until a girl with purple hair and dark blue eyes walked in the room. She was wearing the same uniform as me. She didn’t move. She just stared at me. I stared at her in horror. Was she going to be told off for this? I thought. The next thing I knew was that she was walking towards me. Oh no! Was I in danger? No. There’s no way that thought is happening. Every step the girl took, she was heading closer and closer to me. Great. Now her eyes are more creepier than ever. I stared at her for a hot moment and at last, I was about to scream when suddenly, she said,“Hello. What’s your name?” Oh. I thought that she was gonna kill me but instead, she seems nice to me. “Oh. Hello. My name is Zoe Grey. What’s yours?” I shivered while I was doing my speech. We stared at each other for another minute until finally, the girl responded,” My name is Sukah. Nice to meet you, Zoe.” “Oh, it’s nice to meet you too, Sukah,” I replied with a little smile spreading on my face followed by a nervous laugh. “What brings you here?” Sukah continued. “Oh. I’m just going to the bathroom. What about you?” I replied to her. “Yes, me too!” Sukah replied back to me. I was very pleased that I had gotten into this conversation that I didn’t realize that I had to get back to science class to watch those boring students do their boring experiment. “Well, it was nice meeting you, Zoe. See you around!” Sukah replied. “You too, Sukah,” I replied back with a grin. “You too.” I ran back to class only to find all of the students crying and the teacher roaring like a demon who has been hit by a cursed potion. “HOW DARE YOU! THIRTY MINUTES AND YOU ALL FAILED THIS EXPERIMENT! YOU ARE DESPICABLE! I WISH I NEVER HAD A CLASS LIKE YOU! Anyways, remember to do your homework as punishment. Write a letter saying to me who has made this mess the most. We will tally up all the votes the next time I have you stinky brats tomorrow. The person who gets the most votes will be taken away to the dump of doom. And this competition doesn’t include Zoe since she didn’t even participate in the experiment. And now, class dismissed.” Phew. That was close. I nearly got dumped. I said goodbye to the teacher with a grin and walked out of the classroom. I hurried to my next class. Yay. Maths.
