Chapter 1

Many would call my life a curse from the beginning a devastating piece of work I am, A naive, young woman eager to learn more about life and how everything works and why. I have no labels for anything it is what it is, yet people around me love to judge by the look in my eyes and the fear in my heart. This is what I call a combination of truth and curiosity packed into one human being - ME! Yes me! Ella Alvarez a seventeen year old teenager raised by my two parents Pablo and Fatima. Both my parents work hard to raise me and try to do the best possible. I am the only child to Pablo and Fatima but have a long link of other relatives I will talk about later on. I live in the barrio, a long way from any upper end suburb in the US, this is home to me and I feel there is no other way to live.

I get ready for the first day of school, my Junior year in high school. My mother yells from the living room

“Ella vamos to the car you’re going to be late!” I yell back to my mother

“There I go!”

As I walk out the door my father Pablo stopped me and handed me a lunch pale

“Ella here is lunch”

I looked at my father and thank him for the lunch. I see my mother in our family car as she pulls the key in the ignition forward I was already seating in the passenger side.

“Mom I hope everything goes well at work today.”

“Ella everything will be fine these rich people are too demanding.”

When my mother told me this I hoped and prayed she wouldn’t be terminated from her job.

My family is very religous and believe in God and an all mighty and I never doubt them. This is why my faith is so strong willed.

“Ella have a good day at school”

“Thanks Mom I will.”

As I got out of my mother’s car I walked toward the double doors, as I was walking I looked back and seen my mother vanished into thin air. I looked at my schedule in hand and noticed it was English class with Mrs. Kellogg and thought to myself I wonder if she is related to the Kelloggs' that own the cereal company. I walked in the classroom and saw a few students sitting quietly at their desk waiting for Mrs. Kellogg.

As I sat down I hear the cranking of the door open I see an older woman in her mid 60s walk in

“Oh this must be Mrs. Kellogg”

I said to myself. She looked rough and rugged with her attitude and silent ways I felt this was going to be a rough year.

“Alright class turn your pages to Chapter One.”

I opened my book and noticed Chapter One was poetry I felt a breath of relief to know we were going to write poetry.

“ Today I need ya’ll to read fundamentals of poetry, the first chapter, after

Reading the first Chapter I want ya’ll to write a poem on anything you want.”

I was happy we were doing poetry as the first Chapter this was my favorite sub-topic of English. As soon as the bell rang Mrs. Kellogg says

“Class I want this due tomorrow at 5:00pm in my box”

I walked out of class and waited for my father to pick me up.
