Chapter 1 - Wake Up

September 16th, 2042

He hurried me off, telling me to be safe . . . That sure sounded like Asra, always putting others before himself.

He told me to run, and that's exactly what I did. Tears began to run down my face as I heard the sounds of soldiers screaming in the distance.

The sound of gunshots rang out all around me and I started to feel sick. I looked back, I shouldn't have and I knew that, but I did.

As I looked behind me, I searched for Asra along the many faces of the soldiers, hoping I wouldn't find him lying on the ground.

Soon enough I found him, he was near the front of the crowd. The thought of that angered me, the fact that grown men would rather stand back and watch a 16 year old boy die rather than themselves.

I watched Asra from a distance, even if I was supposed to be running. Suddenly there was a large cloud of black smoke that came rushing in, throwing those in the front backwards, slamming into meant buildings.

I watched as Asra's body was thrown backwards, slamming into a nearby mound of rocks and the remains of a building. I began to run after him, but the black cloud engulfed me and everything went black.

Hi, I'm Cammie Willow, or you can call me Cam. My life hasn't worked out the best, as you can tell so far.

That was my older brother, Asra.

I am a 17 year old girl living on my own in this reck of a world, and here is my story.

I shot up, waking up from my deep sleep, sweat running down my forehead. I rub my eyes to get them adjusted to the smoke filled air.

I remember that night, I was only 14 when it happened. He stared into my eyes as we split ways. I was on tears, I mean, how could I not be?

My older brother, my own flesh and blood! Was heading off into battle, a battle he would have to fight a greater force than we knew of at the time.

I got up, out of my bed - if you could even call it that, it's more like a few blankets on the ground - and wipe the stray tears I just realised had fallen of my face.

I peeked out from my hideout, making sure no one was outside. I looked out from the pile of wreckage I've been hiding under at the almost pitch black sky.

I has been like this for almost 2 years now. The sky was constantly dark, the air was smokey, and it just makes me feel constantly sick . . .

I wince, turning my head as I hear a far off scream in the distance. "Town Population, now 152 . . ." I mark off a number in my torn notebook, sighing as I think about how fast the population has dropped.

' The world's a mess ' I thought to myself, maybe even worse than that too be honest. Nothing's been the same since that "thing" came.

That . . . creature, had taken over. The "Illuser" I think is what they are calling it, as bad as that might sound. But I mean hey, who do we have to give things names anymore?

I've never seen it for myself - other then the incident, or far in the distance - but I've heard things about it. I've studied it based off what I've caught other survivors saying. (Gotta eavesdrop just a bit).

I've heard that it's a tall, dark figure that can seem to grow or shrink in a matter of seconds. Black, merciless eyes that stare into those of it's victims, nearly paralyzing them if it chooses to. I've been told how it engulfs it's victims in darkness before striking.

How it makes people imagine those who they once knew for a chance to overpower them. Just being exposed to the air around it can make you dizzy and hallucinate.

I've been lucky to not experience it's powers yet, atleast, not to their extent. (I've accidently wandered into it's "regions" before though)

Then again, it mainly uses other people to cause hallucinations, and I ahvent had any contact with another person in over 3 months.

Who would have ever thought this would be my fate? "Cammie, the sweet and innocent one", had ended up scavenging for her life. Bunch of f*cked up idiots . . .

Then again, I shouldn't be complaining. I have made it farther than . . . most.

I squint, trying to erase the memories of those I once knew. ' Ugh . . . I need to get my mind off things ' I think to myself.
