Chapter One

It was the night before the reaping of the 74th annual Hunger Games. Katniss’s dad had just gotten home from hunting in the woods. Her father was the one to always bring home the food. Hunting was how her dad fed the family.

“Hi honey, I’m home,” said her dad.

“Hi Dad!,” exclaimed Katniss, very excitedly.

Katniss had always been known to be a “Daddy’s Girl.” People, who lived in District 12, knew about Katniss’s love and admiration for her father. Before her mom passed away, the bond between Katniss and her mother was mother like daughter. After her death, Katniss’s dad was always the one to take care of Katniss and her sister, who was named Prim. Nothing elsleout of the ordinary happened that night. Katniss and her family had their typical small talk at the table. After dinner, Katniss and Prim got ready for bed, in preparation for the dreadful reaping. The night lasted forever. Both Katniss and Prim stayed up thinking of the reaping, and hoping that neither of their names would be drawn.

The morning of the reaping finally arrived, and Katniss was not her typical peppy self. She felt as if her heart would jump out of her chest because she was so nervous. Katniss was usually enthusiastic and kind, but not today. Prim and Katniss jumped out of bed and got dressed for the reaping. Katniss wore her mom’s old dress and a hair clip that reminded her of her mother, while Prim wore Katniss’s old dress. The Everdeen family then walked dreadfully to the square.

Prim had only one, tiny piece of paper with her name on it, while Katniss had 42.

Effie Trinket stepped up to the stage and taunted the crowd, “May the odds but ever in your favor.” The odds never were. The paper was chosen by Effie. The first pick was Peeta Mellark, who was the baker’s son.

Effie Trinket then moved over to the second large bowl, which was filled to the top with countless names, including every teenage girl’s name in District 12. Katniss hoped and prayed that Prim’s name was not chosen. Katniss felt very motherly towards Prim, especially after their mom died. Effie swirled her hand around the bowl multiple times. She quickly reached in and pulled out a name.

“Katniss Everdeen, Where are you?” Effie Trinket asked.

Katniss’s face turned snow white. The crowd had become hushed. The entire District 12 adored Katniss. Katniss attempted to remain calm, but she could not. She broke down in tears in front of the entire district and everyone who was watching the reaping in Panem.

She then said her goodbyes to her family. Prim cried more than Katniss. After she said adieu, she boarded the train to the Capitol. Everyone fell in love with Katniss from the moment she stepped off the train. Her friendly demeanor and stellar looks made the crowd swoon.

Katniss had now been in the capital for one week. There were three more days until she would have to enter the arena. Katniss was a social butterfly. She was making friends with each tribute from different Districts. She did not feel nervous about the games at all, due to the fact that she had made allies with most of the tributes, including the deft, but insidious “Careers”. However, Katniss and Peeta had not already agreed to be allies during the games. She felt as though Peeta hated her because she could make friends more easily than he.

Katniss was surprised when Peeta knocked on her door the night before the games. Expecting it to be Haymitch, who was their mentor, she ran to open the door. Peeta stood timidly. He said, “Katniss, We need to talk.” Her heart dropped immediately.
