CHAPTER ONE - MAYA

Ravenswood, California

“MAYA, THE LIMO’S HERE!” I hear my dad yell out to me as I am applying the last touch to my makeup, lipstick. Once I finish, I close the cap and put it into my bag, slinging it over my shoulder; I look at myself in the floor-length mirror.

Feeling good about my appearance I smile at my image and walk out of my bedroom with my head held high. Some of the security guys shoot me weird glances, while others look at me seductively, I roll my eyes and make my way down the long flight of stairs. When I walk into the kitchen I see my dad talking to the head of security Dan, I walk over to the fruit bowl and pick out a Granny Smith apple. I turn to the two men and clear my throat causing them to stop their conversation and look at me.

“Hey, Dad and Big D. So, are you taking me to school today or what?” I ask, directing the question to Dan who is standing there looking at me with a goofy smile plastered on his face.

“Yeah, let’s get going,” Dan replies, patting my head and walking past me. I smile at him in return, and once he is out of earshot, I turn my attention to dad.

“So, pop. I will see you later for dinner, right?” His smile instantly turns into a frown, which causes me to furrow my eyebrows in confusion. “What’s wrong?” He sighs heavily and walks over to me, placing both of his large hands on my shoulders.

“Listen, princess. I got an emergency notice from the president, and I must report to the White House immediately. I’m sorry, but we’re going to have to postpone our dinner reservation, or you can take Zoey.” I am about to protest when one of the security men comes rushing into the room breathing heavily, we both turn to look at him.

“Mr. Governor, your plane has arrived, and we must leave immediately.” I sigh, turning to look at my father. He shoots me a sympathetic smile before kissing me on the forehead and rushing out of the kitchen. The security guy smirks and winks before licking his lips and following my dad; I roll my eyes making my way over to Dan who is standing and waiting patiently for me by the front door.

“Have a great day at school, M.” I shoot Dan a smile and kiss him on the cheek, opening the door I step out of the limo, immediately being surrounded by teenagers who want to be my “friend.” I blow them off and walk over to Zoey, my best friend. She greets me with a warm smile and a tight hug, “Hey, love. Oh! Did you hear?” She asks once she pulls away.

“Hear what?” Zoey rolls her eyes and groans.

“Jesus, M. You’re the daughter of the freaking governor, and you don’t know what’s going on here in Ravenswood?” I shoot her a glare and begin walking to the front doors of RHS, I step into the school and make my way towards the locker I’ve had since freshman year. “Anyway, people are saying that Jason Knight is back.” I stop dead in my tracks turning to her with confusion evident in my eyes.

“Who’s Jason Knight and what’s so interesting about him?” Zoey’s mouth drops, and I hear several gasps from the people around us, it is so quiet that you can listen to a pin if it falls.

“What! Oh my god, Maya. Are you living under a rock or something? Jason Knight is not only the hottest guy alive, but he’s also the leader of the most dangerous gang in the freaking United States! Sure he’s just nineteen years old but everyone fears him, he can kill a man ten times stronger than him with his bare hands.” I can’t contain my laughter which causes everyone near us to look at me as if I grew an extra pair of arms.

“Yeah right, Zoe. How is that even possible?” I trail off when I see the last person I want to see walk into the school building with his posse of basketball friends and annoying cheerleaders. I groan and quickly turn around, walking away from the antichrist.

“Yo, M!” I keep walking pretending that I didn’t hear him, but that only causes him to yell louder. “Maya!” I hear his loud footsteps as he runs up behind me, he grabs my arm turning me around to face him. “Hey, babe. What’s wrong?” I look up at him with a glare and scoff.

“Lindsey Summers? Really? God, Brandon what the hell is the matter with you?” I ask him through gritted teeth; his face turns from confusion and concern to realization.

“God, Maya. How did you find out about that?” He asks, letting go of my arm immediately and not being able to look me in the eyes.

“It doesn’t matter how I found out!” I pause, taking a deep breath to calm myself before continuing, “How could you do that to me, Brandon. I don’t even know who you are anymore and I’m done with you and every other person that knew about it and did not dare to even tell me!” With that I turn away from him and walk over to my locker, quickly putting in my combination and taking out the books that I need for English Lit.

The bell signaling the end of the day rings, and I quickly gather my things and walk out of Anatomy, just as I turn the corner I run into something hard. My books fall from my hands and land on the floor with a loud thud, I bend down to pick them up and so does the person that I bumped into. We both begin to get up at the same time which causes our heads to crash into each other, I groan and grab onto my head, looking up and seeing a tall guy with dark brown curls and amazing green eyes.

“H-Hey. Sorry about that, I wasn’t looking where I was going.” I chuckle at his nervousness and gently take the books that he is passing over to me.

“Hey, Nicco right?” He smiles at me widely and nods, “It’s fine. Thanks.” I say, motioning to the books I’m holding.

“You’re welcome, Maya. Anyway, see you.” He awkwardly waves bye to me before walking away and making his way over to his friends who are gathered around a small, black leather book. I smile to myself and walk over to my locker, where I see Brandon leaning against the one next to mine with a smirk on his face. I roll my eyes and put in my locker combination. I open my locker and hit him with the door on purpose, he groans and staggers back, but once he regains his balance, he lets out a chuckle and runs his hand through my hair.

“What the hell Brandon!” I yell while smacking his hand away and scoffing. My outburst causes his smirk to widen, and he takes a step closer to me.

“Oh, come on. Babe, you can’t possibly stay mad at me forever.” I quickly exchange my books and slam my locker door shut.

“I can do whatever the hell I want.” I am about to walk away from him, but before I can even take a step, he grabs onto my arm and slams me up against the lockers.

“Who do you think you’re talking to like that, bitch? Now you listen to me, Maya.” I cut him off.

“No, Asshole. You listen to me. As I said before, I can do whatever the hell I want, and there is nothing you can do about it. Touch me like that again, and it will be the last thing you do.” With that, I take my knee and kick him as hard as I can where the sun doesn’t shine. He automatically lets go of me and falls to the ground holding onto his man parts. I take that opportunity to walk past him and out of the school doors.

As soon as I arrive home, I go straight to work on my homework. I spend about an hour and a half doing it before I walk back downstairs to get a snack when I get down there I see about five of the security men huddled around the table staring intensely at a small black phone. Dan is among those men with a frown on his face.

“Hey, Big D. What’s going on?” I ask. He jumps up and snatches the phone from view. He clears his throat before speaking.

“Nothing, Muffin. You should eat something then head on up to your room and it’s getting late.” He doesn’t look me in the eyes, so I know something is wrong.

“No, Dan. Not until you tell me what the hell is going on.” I say standing up straighter and attempting to look more defiant. He sighs in annoyance and walks around the table towards me, placing both of his hands on my shoulders.

“Ok, M. Before I tell you-you’ve got to promise me that you won’t freak out.” His expression is nothing but serious, and that makes me even more nervous.

“Fine, can you just say it already?” He nods.

“You heard about Jason Knight, right?” I nod, not liking where this is going. “Okay. You remember the kid your father had killed three years ago, Andrew Knight?” I nod again. “Well, Jason came back, and he’s not happy with your dad. He wants revenge, and that means that you’re in danger. He knows about you Maya, and he will do anything that he can to get his hands on you. The good thing is that you have us to protect you so you don’t have to freak out, but you are not going to be allowed to leave the house for anything.” I groan.

“What about school, Dan? I can’t miss school, it’s my senior year.” He nods in understanding as if he thought about this before.

“Yes, I know. You are going to have Matt and me as your bodyguards. We’re going to be with you the entire day.” He pulls me in for a hug. “I love you, Muffin. I will not let anything happen to you.” I nod into his shoulder and pull away.

“I lost my appetite, so I’m just going to go to bed. Night, Big D.” I shoot him a small smile and begin walking out of the kitchen and back up the flight of stairs.

“Night, M.” As soon as I walk into my room, I change into my pajamas and pull my dark blonde hair up into a ponytail. A chill creeps up my spine and a feeling that someone is watching me sweeps throughout my body. I slowly turn my head towards my window and look outside. It’s dark, but I don’t miss the hooded figure of a guy walking away from the large front gates of my house. I gasp and run over to it, closing the curtains.

Was that him? I think to myself. I shake my head and walk over to my bed, laying myself down on my satin sheets. What’s going to happen at school tomorrow and what exactly does this Jason Knight person want from my dad and me? I shake those thoughts from my mind and go to sleep.
