1: A Day In The Life Of Me
“World’s Sexiest Man? Can you believe that?” My ears perked up at the sound of my best friend’s disbelief.
Janet dropped the magazine onto the counter top of the bar. I knew that was her way of telling me to check it out for myself. I stopped working momentarily to examine the cover of the magazine and instantly regretted it when I saw the cover.
Giovanni Emilio Perez voted this year’s sexiest man alive. Page 86 includes a sit down interview with the hot bachelor as we discuss his success, personal life, and relationship.
“First, he was number two on Forbes top 30 under 30 and now this.” My friend continued to gush.
I began to tune out her rambling with an eye roll and busied myself with drying the freshly washed shot glasses.
Once, she took a pause from her rambling, I inserted my two cents by saying. “I can’t believe that the Lord hasn’t answered my prayers yet.”
“How hard do I have to pray for failure to happen in his life?” I asked turning my head to the sky.
I said this with a shake of my fist and Janet sighed with disappointment at my bitter response.
“Bitter party of one, your table is ready.” She muttered causing and I snorted unattractively at her statement.
“Yeah, it’s kind of hard to be happy for my overly successful ex given my circumstances aren’t all that great.”
“I still can’t believe the two of you ended up getting a divorce.” Janet said shaking her head.
I opened my mouth to give a retort when the theme music to ′Entertainment Daily′ came on. And of course the first story was about... Gio and his new ‘girlfriend’.
“Welcome to Entertainment Daily, I’m your host Angelina Markov and I’m here to give you all the juicy details and an inside look of your favorite celebrities lives.”
“To kick it off we have billionaire CEO of Envision Talent Agency spotted in Cancun with his girlfriend, Katrina Petrov. The two have been seen--.”
The Latina reporter continued to ramble on and on, but I couldn’t hear a world she said.
I could feel myself wanting to gag as I stared at the different photographs taken by the paparazzi of the two smiling coyly at one another, holding hands, getting out of the car, and the one that gave me great difficultly keeping down my lunch was a picture of my ex-husband with his tongue down his new fling’s throat.
Pulling me out of my thoughts, I heard one of the patrons in the bar call out. “Aye! Perez!”
A burly man who sat sandwiched between two of his buddies at the end of the bar shouted.
“How does it feel to see your husband flaunting his new chick around?” He asked and laughter filled the bar making my cheeks heat in embarrassment.
To my surprise, I even felt myself letting out a fake laugh through clenched teeth.
“Very funny, Al.” I said with a tight lipped smile and he chuckled to himself as his buddy next to him slapped him on the back.
“I thought it was funny.” I heard him whisper and immediately fought back an eye roll.
“Can we just talk about how cute the two of them are together?” The other host, Raven Rosa said. “I mean they’re a hot couple.”
“Yeah, they certainly are. And they’ve been together for what a year, a year in a half?”
“Almost two years.” Raven clarified with a nod.
“Its just nice to see him back in the game after that nasty split from his ex-wife, Chas--.”
Before she could even finish her sentence, I grabbed the remote from behind the bar and switched the channel to ESPN.
Thankfully no one in the bar seemed to mind.
Janet gave her a confused look. “What was that all about?”
“I am practically a running joke to these people around here.” I said gesturing to the crowded bar of people, who resumed their previous conversations.
“Why?” Janet asked out of sheer curiosity.
“No one believes you were married to Giovanni Perez?”
“No one believes I was married to that much money and walked away without a penny to my name.” I argued.
“Hell, you even still have the man’s last name.” She pointed out and I groaned inwardly.
Don’t remind me.
“People don’t think that’s weird?” She asked her and I shrugged.
“No one knows my last name.” I clarified.
“Plus I’m now hyphenated. Besides, I’m sure if people did know they’d just think it’s an uncanny coincidence.”
“Also I work in a bar. Half the people I serve are either too drunk to remember or too busy hooking up to notice.”
Janet didn’t say anything. She just stared at me with pity. And I hate pity.
“Can people just believe you were that dumb to sign a prenup?” She asked and I gave a soft shrug with an eye roll before beginning to wipe down counters.
“I mean it’s like you guys predestined your marriage to fail.” Janet said and I raised an eyebrow in confusion at her accusation.
“Really?” I asked and received a nod from my friend. “How so?”
Shrugging Janet said. “I just think if a couple signs a prenup, they are going into the marriage focused on the money instead of the love for each other.” She explained.
“I guess that’s why we didn’t sign one.”
Janet seemed shocked when told her that. “You didn’t and yet you guys still managed to get divorced?”
“I thought you guys would’ve been together forever.” She said and I chuckled bitterly to myself.
“Yeah, you and me both.”
But life is funny. And it almost always has different plans for us.
