Chapter 1
Avery's POINT OF VIEW 0
I stared out the car window as a singular tear dripped down my cheek, rolling over my chin and drops into my lap. Mountains, valleys, forests and rivers zip past me as a small puff of dust trails close behind us. I hear a familiar rumble of the dirt road under the car.
A mysterious fire burned down our old house, we had nowhere left to turn but an old cottage in the woods. My parents were short on money, in other words they were broke.
The car comes to a screeching halt, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I study the run down place, it's completely caked in rust. I wince as a guest of wind sends the chimney flying.
So this is it, I think, our new home.
