Chapter 1

My name is Marie Alice Goldings. I got shot in the heart, left arm and stomach. Realistically I should be dead, yet I'm not. I was taken to an underground lab, experimented on whilst my body was slowly dying, put through more and more pain… and now here I am. Alive, lost and… different. Things happened to me in the lab, things I don't want to ever think about again.

I no longer consider myself to be remotely human. I've killed people, seen things happen that I know I could have prevented. I am Marie Goldings, and this is my story.

Sat facing the same wall as I had for the last four months the men in white came, two minutes late this time. Strange. I thought to myself. They're never late, ever… what’s new? Roughly grabbing me by my forearms they hauled me up, dragging me out of my cell like they had done every day since I had woken up. I blanked my mind again, thinking of my old life, wondering if I was missed… I doubted it, I was in a gang, my parents were murdered in front of me when I was five and I dropped out of school because it bored me. I was clever, if I hadn’t of joined the stupid bloody gang I could of gone into something like forensics, helped people like I wanted to. Maybe even find the one who killed my parents! But no, I was destined for the gang. They became my family in a way. They fed me, clothed me, taught me how to defend myself and live.

I was jolted from my thoughts when I was thrown onto the seat, similar to the beds they have in hospitals but covered in blood which belonged to me, and had chains designed to wrap around my ankles and wrists. Yeh, they really didn’t want me escaping. I knew what was coming, he would be coming any minute, the twat with the clip board who would take my blood, inject me with more and more chemicals and mixtures each day, slice my skin with knives and time how quickly it healed. They wanted to make a mega-human, something which couldn’t die, would heal… basically have no faults. Half of the time I would pass out and re-awaken back in my cell, covered in blood, although as time went on my wounds kept healing quicker until I would wake up with none.

How did you do it?! Tell me you stupid bitch!” ah, speak of the devil and he shall appear. He would always give me a warm welcome like that, although I had no idea what I had done that time. I simply stared at him as if he were stupid, frowning in confusion as I stared at him. His whole body was covered in bruises and cuts.

The longer I stared the more I could see myself breaking free from the chains, attacking him like I was some sort of animal. But I couldn’t of done that, the chains were the toughest metal you can make! I glanced down at my chains and saw they were new… no longer covered in my crusting blood, but shining silver like when I first came. And then I remembered.

Leah: The character writing in this is lovely. Everyone feels rich and well fleshed out, even when introduced for only a moment.
