The Depression

Summary

Draco's depression has returned and it's worse than ever. Everything he regrets not doing or talking about is running through his mind. He knows he should tell someone, but who? He just had lunch with Harry yesterday, why didn't he say anything then? Can Harry save Draco from himself? Or is he too late?

The One Who Almost Got Away

All the thoughts running through his head only confused him more. Lots of bad thoughts though. Lots of possibilities. Some of them good, some of them bad. What were they?

What if I killed myself?

What if I wasn’t here?

What if I had actually done something when we were in school?

What if, what if, what if....

Draco’s depression had returned. It was worse than the last time. He pressed the blade closer against his wrist and beads of blood appeared. Draco winced then he felt something running down his arm. He looked down... blood. The blade cut through his skin easily. He repeated the same thing to his other wrist.

β€œI’m so sorry,” Draco whispered, tears pouring down his face.

Draco’s vision began to darken and he fell to his knees. This was it. This was the end. Then there it was... a light. If only he could reach out and grab it.

(Harry’s POV)

A cell phone ringing brought Harry from his thoughts. He looked at the caller ID. It was the hospital, the one Draco worked at. Draco took leave from the wizarding world and took up a job at a Muggle hospital and lived in a Muggle house. Harry wasn’t supposed to take calls when he was working but this, this call seemed different. If Draco were calling Harry, he would have used his own phone, right?

β€œHello?” Harry asked.

β€œHarry, it’s April.”

β€œOh! Hi April. What’s going on?”

β€œIt’s Draco....”

Harry’s heart dropped. He knew this wasn’t good just by April’s tone.

β€œApril, what’s wrong? Did something happen to him? Is he okay?” Harry felt the panic build up in his chest.

β€œI think you should come down here as soon as possible.” Harry could have sworn he heard April’s voice break.

β€œY-yeah. I’m on my way.”

Harry ended the call and ran to his boss’s office.

β€œJake, I have to go. It’s an emergency.”

β€œCan it wait until after your shift?”

β€œDammit Jake, my friend is in the hospital!!” Harry was on the verge of tears.

β€œGod, Harry. I’m sorry. Go right ahead. I’ll get Josh down here to cover your shift for as long as you need.”

Harry ran out of the office, he didn’t look back. Not once. He threw open the door and practically jumped in his car.

After about 15 minutes, Harry pulled into the hospital parking lot. He ran inside and immediately spotted April.

β€œApril!”Harry ran over to her.

β€œHarry.” She embraced him tightly.

β€œWhat happened? Where is he?” Harry felt tears fill his eyes but he pushed them down.

β€œI’ll have Crockett take you to him.”

At that moment a doctor walked up to the pair, Crockett Marcel printed neatly on his white doctor’s coat.

β€œHarry, come with me.”

He followed Crockett to a small private room. Laying in the bed was an unconscious Draco. Draco was quite pale and he had bandages wrapped around both of his wrists.

β€œOh my god.” Harry felt the tears fill his eyes again.

β€œDoes Draco have a history of any mental illnesses?” Crockett asked.

β€œY-yeah. Depression. But he’s been doing good. He hasn’t acted out since...since last time. Crockett, what happened?”

β€œHe slashed both of his wrists. He lost a lot of blood and he’s been unconscious for a few hours.”

β€œThank you for letting me know. Will he...will he be okay?”

β€œWe gave him the general anesthetic and we did our best to close up the wounds. The anesthetic might be what’s keeping him unconscious. If that is the case, then he should be waking up soon.”

β€œThank you,” Harry said.

β€œI’ll come back later to check on him.”

Harry nodded and watched Crockett walk away.

How did he not notice Draco’s pain before? How did he just walk right past it? They had just had lunch the day before, Draco had asked Harry to meet him. Was that his plea for help? Harry entered the room and sat in a chair next to Draco. He couldn’t hold it back any longer, he let the tears pour down his cheeks. Harry took Draco’s hand and pressed a soft kiss against it.

Why didn’t I tell him how I felt?

Why didn’t I do something when we were in school?

Why couldn’t I have just come out and told him?

β€œDon’t you leave me Draco. Don’t leave me alone.” He looked at Draco’s face almost expecting him to open his eyes and look at him.

β€œCome back to me Draco. Please.”

Harry felt a tight grasp around his hand. He looked over at Draco.

β€œDraco?”
