Chapter 1

“Maddy, I love you, but you need to get up. You start school today, you don’t want to be late to your first day of school,” I hear my dad say from the door.

“I’m up!” I chirp getting out of bed.

My senior year, in a school I’d never been, I couldn’t help but be excited. I skip over to my bathroom, staring at my reflection I decide to brush out my hair and throw it into a messy bun before I shower.

I quickly turn on my water to run into my room to grab my clothes I had taken out last night and run back into the bathroom. I jump in the shower quickly, and get dressed.

I finally started to brush my teeth, while playing with my hair to see what I wanted to do.

I couldn’t decide so I just parted my hair into two little sections with dutch braids on top with the rest of my hair out, moving on to my makeup; mascara and eyeliner. I decided to go for some cute little hoop earrings and my favorite locket necklace of me and my mom when I was younger.

After going to my full-sized mirror and looking at my reflection, I was happy with my outfit; a cute but simple white off shoulder crop top with high rise ripped raw hem jeans and my trusty pair of white slip ons.

My phone dings out from my nightstand, telling me it’s almost time to leave the house. I run downstairs and run into my dad in the kitchen while trying to find my keys to my car.

“Hey dad, do you know where my keys are?” I ask quickly.

“Yeah they’re on the key hook, you left them on the counter last night.” He replies.

I smile sheepishly in return, running towards the door. “Thanks daddy! I love you, see you later, kay?.” I say kissing his cheek as I walk out the door.

I run into my jeep and check that my backpack is still in the passenger seat; it is. I start the engine and reverse out my driveway and I stop to pull up gps on my phone seeing that I don’t have a clue where the school is.

I finally leave the street and drive towards the school. When I finally find a parking space, I jump out of my car and grab my backpack from the other side, and lock the doors behind me.

I walk into the building making a beeline straight for the front office, where I’m greeted by a middle aged woman with an aggravated smile that rests upon her lips, “how may I help you?” She asks.

“I actually came in here to get my schedule, I don’t have it.” I say.

“You should have it, they were given the first day of school.” She says with a glare that makes me whither.

“I’m actually new, I just transferred from Arizona. This is technically my first day in the school,” I say with a small smile. She just stares at me with disdain clearly in her eyes.

“Fine. Just go over to the printer, I’ll print it. What’s your name?” She questions.

“Harper, well my full name is Madison Harper,” I say quickly.

Her face visibly brightens, “you’re Lauran Harper’s daughter? How did I not see it, you look just like her” she asks herself in disbelief.

“Yeah, how do you know my mom?” I respond in confusion.

“We went to school together, back in the old days, she was great, she was kind, popular, smart and loved by everyone.” She says with a wistful smile.

“Oh? Really? She never mentioned you, I don’t think… Only her best friend Rory.”

She just smiles at me, “that’s me, it was always Rory and Lauran when we were in school, we were partners in crime. Anyways, the papers should be done. It was nice to meet you Madison, you’ll be late if you don’t hurry. Do tell your mom I said hi and I’d love to meet up sometime.” I hear her say as I try and walk out the door instead I turn around to Rory.

“Mom got into an accident, she didn’t make it, and I’m so sorry I had to be the one to tell you that… but thanks so much for the papers,” I say as my eyes slightly burn.

Her smile quickly fades, “I’m so sorry to hear that, but don’t you be sorry for me, if you don’t mind my asking, how long ago was it?” She asks.

“Uhhh… six months ago, I’m really sorry to cut this short, but nice meeting you. I’ve got to go.” I say as I scurry out of the room blinking hard and run into a surprisingly hard chest.

“Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you there. Sorry.” I say super fast towards the beautiful creature that was staring at me while trying to blink the tears out of my eyes. He didn’t look happy to see me.

I sheepishly run in another direction to try and find my class. I almost run into another person trying to find the English classroom.

I stop and tap a random person in the hallway on the shoulder, she turns to me with a big friendly smile.

“I don’t mean to bother you, but I can’t find room 317, Mrs. Diaz, can you help me?” I ask her, I don’t know what else to do so I shift from foot to foot.

“Sure! It’s down the hall to the right, I can walk you there, I have her too. I’m Bailey by the way.” She introduces with a hand out in front of her. I look at her for a second before shaking her hand.

“I’m Madison, I’m new here and I don’t know where the heck I’m going to, so thank you so much,” I smile at her.

“No problem, It’s totally understandable that you don’t know where the classes are.” She says to me. While she finishes her conversation, I take the time to look at her; she’s tall, slim, with blonde wavy hair, and glasses.

“We should go, the bells are gonna ring soon,” she says to me, snapping me out of my trance.

I shake my head and nod, following silently after her long strides. We come to a stop in front of 317, where a girl is arguing with the beautiful creature I bumped into in front of the office.

I don’t mean to eavesdrop but I overhear her say, “Gage, when are you going to take me out? Better yet, come over, my parents are out of town.”

“No, Avery, I don’t know what you want me to say, me and you aren’t together, never have been, never will be. I just want you to leave me alone. I’m sick of seeing you everywhere can’t you bother someone else?” He asks with annoyance clear in his tone.

“Baby, I know you don’t mean that. Me and you are supposed to be together, You’re the hottest guy in school and I’m the hottest girl in school; we’re a match made in heaven.” She says with a proud smile.

“Too bad I wasn’t made in heaven, now I’ve got a class that I need to go to. Goodbye.” He says, pushing her -lightly- away from his body and walks straight into the classroom.

I turn to Bailey, to ask a question but she just answers me before I can. “Avery Daniels, self-appointed queen bee, yeah, no one likes Avery, she just thinks they do. I mean she’s popular but not in a good way, yah know? And the boy is Gage Owens, pretty much a bad boy but not really, stays to himself, hates almost everyone, except for his two friends. And their girlfriends. Oh! And his twin sister.” He has a twin?

“Oh, well cool. I think.” I say, she grabs my hand and drags me into the classroom pulling me into a seat next to her.
