“I have a theory.”
Her soft voice carried through the open space, causing shivers to run up his spine. Although he could not see her in the dark, he could feel her warmth only feet away.
His voice responded, quiet, “Oh?”
“You said that you don’t believe in soulmates, that they aren’t real.” She breathed out, “But I think that you’re wrong.”
He let out a soft chuckle at that. She was obsessed with romance, especially the concept of soulmates. An idea he found absurd, and ridiculous. I mean, one person out of millions for you, the odds were stacked against a billion. Life couldn’t be that cruel.
“And why would I be wrong?”
With a sudden upward movement, she turned to him. “Because of love.”
“What does love have to do with it?” He in turn sat up, facing the outline of her silhouette, “You can fall in love with multiple people.”
“But there is only one person who can give you passion and comfort. Who can be your best friend as well as a lover. I believe that there is a person who can give you everything, and that’s why the odds aren’t in our favor.”
He thought before responding, “So, you’re saying that the odds aren’t in our favor, because the person we are looking for is the ‘perfect’ package?”
“Not necessarily. I’m saying that, I believe that there is one person out there who completes us, and that is worth the search. The pain of waiting and being lonely, is worth it for that one person.”
He shook his head, turning back to the side so he could lay down. The idea was too farfetched, too hopeful.
“I don’t think so.”
“I do.”
She laid down next to him, this time closer. He attempted to focus on the sky above them. The stars that shined up above, looking down at the pair. With eyes fluttering shut, his thoughts ran wild. A person who is perfect for him, out of billions of people. He didn’t understand how she could be so optimistic. Not in a world that takes even the happiest of people and breaks them into nothing. He refused to believe that in such a broken world, there could be a perfect gift in the form of another person.
“Where do you come up with these theories?”
“In my brain.”
He released a chuckle at the answer, “Why?”
“Because love is fascinating. It’s ability to consume people and cause chaos is insane.” She sighed, caught up in her thoughts.
“And what makes you think that this theory, out of the hundred others you have, is correct?”
She responded quietly, as if she could break the words if she spoke them without caution.
“Because nothing worth having comes easily.”
