@~ Chapter 1 ~@

.@. Never Down .@.

Light faded in and out, suddenly flaring into the shape of a large, brown, something. I whinnied, but something about the shape was comforting.

“It’s alright, my beautiful filly. I am Muddy Lands. Your mother.” My mother neighs, out of instinct, I nudge her flank with my soft, velvety muzzle.

“What are we? Do I have a name?” I ask, looking at my mother with a questioning look. She laughs, a melodic sound that seemed to sooth my ears.

“We are horses, and your name, I have yet to decide.” She responds, blowing warm air over my thick, brown baby fur.

I suddenly realized that I was on the grass. I did NOT like this. I pushed my legs up, but they flopped under me.

Scowling, {A/N If a horse can scowl} I pushed myself back up, refusing to stay on the grass. I flicked my head, gazing over at a group of horses, a herd, I think.

So many colors mixed into one, but one, a big, red stallion, stuck out. I galloped forward, striding and rampaging across the earth as I ran towards the stallion.

I hear hoofbeats behind me, but farther apart and heavier than mine. A brown coat comes into view beside me.

My mother has a rich brown coat, with a wide blaze, a star, and a snip all mixed together. All of her legs are white up to her knees.

She nuzzles me, and I notice that we stopped, and that the red stallion was right in front of us. He had no markings on his face, or his legs, his fur was crimson red, same with his mane. He lowered his head to the same height as mine, most foals would hide, but I stood there, unwavering. He nickered softly. “I am Crimson Day, your father, and lead stallion of Swift Winds herd.”

My Father? My mother’s tail swished, swatting at a fly. “Her name is Never Down.”

I walk around the edge of the herd, ears pricked as I looked over the meadow that I was now in. It was well sheltered, and there was a lake in the middle of it all. The sun shined through the treetops, decorating the wildflowers of the meadow in soft gold shades.

The herd clustered together, stallions and mares, because my father was so nice, that he let the stallions stay as long as they didn’t push their luck.

A little brush of a muzzle on my flank gets my attention. I turn, seeing a crystal white filly.

“H-hi. I’m Snow Dove.” She said tentatively.

“Hello! I’m Never Down.” I nicker back.

{2 Years Later. }

I ran across the lands, leaping, running, racing with my herd. I was up front, right beside my father. We were the red streaks flying across the fields, with horses of all colors behind us.

My coat had finally grown in, I have a bright red coat, mane, and tail. I have one sock that reaches up to my knee on my left back leg. A half pasture on my back right leg, and on my right front leg, I have a sock. My blaze matched my mothers’ and my legs were long and nimble like my fathers.’

Then, my father slowed to a canter, then a trot. I followed his gaze, skidding to a stop. We were on a hill, and currently, in the field below us, a herd was scattering, being chased by… horses? With- what is on their backs?

“Father. What are those?”

He looks a tad bit shaken. “Those are humans. Nasty things. That herd is likely to be taken.”

I pin my ears, disgusted and appalled, how dare they. We are mustangs, deserving to be as wild and free as the winds.

My father turned, trumpeting to the herd, all of us racing off, away from the danger, though I have a feeling that the danger will catch up to us.
