“Legend has it, if you stand in front of a mirror holding a cup and a candle you can open a doorway between dimensions. But do you leave, or does something else come through?” she leaned in, dimples appeared. I felt her warm breath. Cinnamon and vanilla from the tea she made earlier that day.

“Grandma,” I whined. My small fingers wrapped around my quilted blanket’s edges. It was too heavy for my wrists to pull up to my chin. “What d-dimensions? And w-will anything come out of the mirror?”

My eyes glanced over to my princess and stars themed desk. It was crème and baby pink, in the middle, a mirror framed and the top shaped into a crown. I saw Grandma’s reflection while she sat on my bed side, her knee propped up.

Her dark brown hair braided behind her back. No wisps escaped. Wrinkles around her eyes and on her forehead. Grey eyes similar to a cloudy day with sunshine behind them. She giggled.

“No, you’re safe. Only we can go through,” she promised. Her fingers weaved through my auburn hair.

“Go through to where?” I asked. My toes curled up into the thick material, trying to receive more warmth on the cold winter’s day.

“Worlds,” she grinned, “So many beautiful worlds.”

She always had a gentle pause between her words. It never felt pushed . . . it was like a sunny day in a meadow with a breeze that tickled the nose.

I stared at her hands. She held a thin candle on a small plate. The wax melted on one side, a goop that traveled down onto the plate - moving in a slow pace. The flame danced silently in the night.

“What kind? Oh, I bet there is one filled with green - like our hill! Flowers covered everywhere,” I declared.

Grandma chuckled. Her hand covered her mouth.

“You bet? I think you’re right dear.”

I stopped smiling. My pillow crinkled when I shifted the weight. “Is that where Mommy is?”

Her fingers stopped brushing my hair, instead she placed it on the top of my head. She set the candle plate down on my nightstand. Then Grandma touched her neck. A chain held a small locket. My twenty-two collection of soft plushy bunnies, that were piled in the corner, watched our silence.

Grandma stared out my bedroom window. No rain. No snow. A quiet night showcased the stars.

“I believe so, Grace,” she whispered.

And as I recalled this memory when I was eight years old . . . I fell asleep listening to Grandma’s soft hums. I hugged Mom in my dream. Dreaming . . . thinking.

What’ll happen if I stood in front of the mirror? With a candle and a cup . . .

Author’s Note:

This is from my Wattpad story. It’s inspired by Open Novella Contest 2020, hoping to finish writing this. This novella will be diving into a new reality. I have no idea what this story has in store. This fiction will be a first draft.

We’ll be going into an alternate universe with Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Omegas. Inspired by Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley. This will be way different from werewolves. This’ll be a society that are demi-humans, yes, they will have heightened senses. A world of “order.” Pressure of finding their match, yes. This is a new take. Someone’s point of view from our world that has jumped into the AU world. Wonder what’ll happen?

Thank you for joining this journey! 💕
