Where it all began...

Jay Halstead POV

I’m on a call to Voight when I am interrupted when Helena and Blake start fighting. A hand rips my phone away from my ear.

“Grandpa Hank can you please tell Blake to stop being such an ass!” Helena stated as she put my boss on speaker. I hear Hank sigh deeply before repeating what my daughter said.

“Grandpa Hank can you tell Helena to stop being a spoiled bitch!” Blake retorted. Their vocabulary surprises me at times.

“ALRIGHT!” I yell. They both look at me. I grab my phone back and tell Hank I’ll call him later. “Enough, you guys. I am sick of you two fighting. Do I need to remind you that Hank is at work and with all of my colleag-”

“And Hailey.” Blake interrupts.

“OOOOOOOO!” they both say looking smug. It shocks me how they can fight then be allies against me in a matter of seconds. I can’t help but laugh and shake my head at their shenanigans.

I am a single father of two beautiful children that clearly get their language, sassiness, and courage from me. Blake is fifteen, he has mouse brown hair, emerald green eyes and a tall frame like me. Helena is thirteen. She has dazzling blonde hair, my crystal blue eyes and a smaller structure.

A knock at the door jolts us all from our daily laughing session. I shoo them away to go to their rooms. They know to do this as none of my intelligence family are aware of their existence, only Antonio and Hank. Not even Hailey.

I open the door to Antonio there with an unimpressed look on his face. He storms in and shouts, “Helena Rose Halstead and Blake Henry Halstead get you’re smug little asses down here now!”

They both come out of their shared offic room at the end of the hallway, scared expressions painted on their faces. Slowly making their way down the hall, Antonio starts telling them off for taking me away from my job.

“Uncle Antonio that’s not fair. Dad’s day off means he should be with us, not on the phone to Grandpa Hank all day working on a case!” Helena argued back.

“Speaking of work.” Antonio pauses to look at me “We need you in. It’s a special case and Voight wants you in on this.” He gives me an apologetic look but I shrug it off.

"Helena you are in charge. Don't let Blake near the stove, here is fifty bucks for pizza and food. I want to come home to TWO alive children. Remember you have school tomorrow, go to bed at a reasonable time. I'm going to call Uncle Will and he's coming to make sure all of my requirements are met."

"Dad why is Lena in charge? I'm older!" Blake whined.

Helena snorted, "Older my ass. Because I am more responsible and am less likely to burn the apartment down. Obviously." she shot back at her older brother.

Antonio and I are caught in the middle and when they go to tackle eachother, we are reliable to hold them back. I took on Blake, which was quite easy, and sent him off to his room. However, Antonio was having trouble calming Helena down. She was screaming and kicking, trying anyway possible to get past him.

All of a sudden, there was a knock at the door. Helena stopped screaming and ran to get Blake. I sighed and opened the door. It was Hailey.

“I can come back if you’re busy.” Hailey stammered. She turned to leave but I grabbed her arm and spun her around.

“Stay. I was just about to head to the district so this is just me getting a free ride!” I chuckled. Hailey giggled along too. That moment, my phone buzzed. I checked it and it was a message from Helena ′ASK HER OUT’ it said. I didn’t bother replying as she knew the answer.

Shoving my phone back into my pocket, I shouted a quick goodbye to Antonio and my kids, obviously not saying their names but they knew I was saying it to them too.

“Why was Antonio with you? He was chasing down a lead not visiting you.” my partner asked. She looked up at me with questioning eyes. I couldn’t lie to her.

“He was checking in on me on my day off. Antonio knows I don’t like being at home when the rest of you are working a case. So should you Hails, you’re my partner” I teased. She laughed as I knocked my arm to her shoulder.

We arrived at work in no time. Boy was it going to be a long, sleepless next few days.
