Chapter One
Alone
Chapter One
Before we start our story, let's have a little chat. This world is cruel. It's hard to the best of people. People carry animosity towards
one another, but usually not because of that person, but the group itself. Whether that's the color of your skin, gender, sexuality, or something you're
born with that makes you different. Sometimes, this hatred isn't because they don't like you, but because they fear you. They fear you and what
you can become. Now, this exists everywhere, including this lovely place called Hertofyrd. See, in Hertofyrd, mutagins in people's blood have
started becoming more and more common. About 10% of the population is classified as a mutant now. Now, that may sound cool to you, but
to the humans of Hertofyrd, they found it needed to stick the mutants in their own sections and not allow them to leave. They quarantined an entire
section of people because they are afraid. If you are a mutant and caught outside the Mutant Colony, you'll be sent to The Pit; a prison that stops
the use of any mutant abilites. Now, that's because they fear mutants. Rightfully so, too. Most of the mutant population believes that they are the
rightful rulers of Hertofyrd. Most believe that human don't deserve to command mutants but the other way around sounds good to them. So, they use
their powers for evil, and cause distress and fear into the heart of your average citizens. Then there is our group. A vigilante group called White Hat.
They don't look to rule, but instead they look to show the humans that not all mutants are bad. That mutant and humans can live side by side and not
be segregated. They look for peace, instead of the hatred and animosity that is about to cause a war. Is it right for them to break the laws to save
innocent lives? Well, that's for you to decide, not me. This is a story about striving for justice and equality, in a different way. Our story starts in the
Distant Colony. My name, is Drake. You can call me, Sin.
Now, to understand everything about what we are fighting for, i'll start from the beginning. In the Distant Colony, a man and a women whom
were mutants were living the normal lives of humans. The man was a healer and a very respected doctor. Nobody had a clue he was a mutant.
The woman was a construction worker who worked with other mutants. Nobody knew that they were mutants, except the crew. They lived
a happy life. That is, until they were nine months pregnant with me. My mother, whom had the ability to float objects, wanted to give birth
inside the home in order to not risk them seeing I had a mutagy. So, they did. When I was born they were so happy. The smiles on their face were so
big. My mom caused me to float and I was having a grand time floating towards the roof. That is, until the door was busted down. A nasty group
of headhunters, i'll explain them more later, came bursting in the door. They shot my father multiple times. My mother screamed and pushed me
farther down the house. I remember hearing, "Heal from that motherfucker." As more shots rang through the house.
"Don't hurt my baby!" My mother pleaded with these horrible people.
"He's a mutant in the Distant Colony, this is on you. KILL THE KID!" One of them screamed, his raspy voice ringing through my ears. More shots ring
through the house, and I fall to the floor. That can only mean one thing. I landed without hurting myself, luckily. But I hear the big
steps of the monsters coming at me. One of them reaches me and points the gun at me.
"Attack me! Come on, you fuckin' mutant! Give me a reason!" He screams at me, hatred in his eyes.
"Shoot him!" Another yells from down the hall.
"I can't! He isn't attacking, which means we have no proof he is a mutant! That's against the H/M Code!" The man shoving a barrel in my eye says.
It would appear this man has no idea that I am too young to even consider fighting back.
"Fine, i'll do it!" Another man walks up behind the one holding a gun to me and raises his pistol in my direction. A shot rings, but it echo'd to the point
where it sounded like two. I feel an extremely sharp pain in my back. The man that shot me collapses to the floor.
"Grab the kid, we need to get him help. Just because he's the son of law breaking mutants, doesn't mean that he is one." The man who just shot my
shooter says.
"He's going to die. There is no way he makes it. He was shot through and through." The man that orginally aimed a gun at me says, while picking
me up.
"He'll live." All these men are wearing masks, so I have no idea what they look like actually. Their masks are Pitch Black and covering their whole face.
Only thing you can see is their eyes. They wrapped me in some warm blanket, but I feel so cold. I don't feel pain though, it's numb honestly. That's
the last thing I remember of the house.
I woke up in a hospital bed, with a doctor leaning over me.
"Hey, little guy. You're concious." He says, smiling at me, "My name is Doctor Yiuku. I'm glad to finally get to speak to you after all these years." He
reaches his hand out and I pull my head away. Did he say all these years?
"It's okay to be afraid. If it weren't for the quick response of the men who were with you, you'd be dead right now. I know you may not understand,
but I would like to tell you anyways. You were shot through your spine. You shouldn't be alive, or able to walk. But there is enough metal in your body
that you're basically Bionic at this point." He smiles. I don't really understand, but I do know that I feel a comfort towards Mr. Yiuku. A gentleness.
"You're 10 years old, and your name is Drake Southernson. Your voice should come back soon. You're a little behind on education, we weren't able
to give you much. We did our best for you, though." 10 years old? "You probably don't remember all about me and how you can walk and talk, but
you will shortly. You've been under a forced coma for about 2 months. So, give it time." Forced... Coma? "Sadly, you are better now. So, we needed to
find you a good home. Which, we have." He gets up and motions to me to do the same. I move my legs and smile. It's such a tingly feeling, I love it.
I get up and go to stand, I immediatly fall over. Mr. Yiuku helps me up. "Easy, Drake. Take it slow." He says. I rise to my feet with the help of Yiuku.
He slowly removes his hand from my arm, and I struggle to balance. I force my left foot to go forward, and take a step. I laugh in glee. It feels so tingly.
I take another step, then another, then I begin to jog a bit. I then take a quick lap around the room. "I figured it wouldn't take long." Yiuku smiles.
I stop and catch my breath, "This is fun!" I say. I then grasp my hands over my mouth. In amaze that I just talked. Yiuku chuckles, "Didn't take long,
now did it?" I smile, then it fades. I rememeber those last words that I heard. 'Just because he's the son of law breaking mutants.' I walk over to Yiuku
and ask, "Am I a lawbreaking mutant?" The words flow so easy. As if I never stopped talking. Yiuku kneels down and sighs a heavy sigh, "No, Drake.
You aren't. You're a great kid, with so much potential. I believe you'll become the version of you your parents always wanted." He smiles at me.
His smile is warm and convinces me he is telling the truth. I smile back. A lady walks in behind Yiuku and smiles, "He's up!" Yiuku jumps a little and turns
around. "Ah! Mrs. Wu! Perfect timing." He says, shaking her hand. "He is walking and talking. He even went for a small run around the room. Best shape
i've seen him in." Yiuku says, smiling back at me. Behind Mrs. Wu, walks in a little boy. Not any older than me.
"Oh! You two have never met! Shoto, meet your older brother, Drake." This little boy, Shoto, has black hair and vibrant bright blue eyes. He's a tad
smaller than me, so i'd assume he's a year younger; or short. He walks closer to me, "Why is your hair red but your eyes dark blue? Are you the devil?"
He asks, with no hesitation. "Shoto!" Mrs. Wu yells.
"I am not." I respond, "I just got my dad's hair and my mom's eyes." I reach my hand out.
"That's fair. I'm Shoto." He responds while reaching his hand out. We shake hands and that was the first interactions between two friends that would
never seperate.
The Wu's lived in the Mutant Colony due to them all being mutants. Mr. Wu could manipulate things to make them nearly invisible. Mrs. Wu could
influence her body to shrink and grow. Shoto, could manipulate his body to go invisible. His power was awesome. He'd always be pranking me with it.
The Mutant Colony was one of three. Distant Colony, Ancient Colony, and the Mutant Colony. Those three colony's made up Hertofyrd. Although the
Mutant Colony was segregated and quarentined practically, they had humans living in it. No mutant would be a teacher, or a cop, or certain other
things like that, for they were usually dead set on revenge. So, they made exceptions. There was 4 high schools in the colony all together. There was
Synnax, Ironil, Uyanda, and Piljo. Piljo was a human only high school. Our schools would see eachother all over town though. Even though everyone
hated eachother, they still saw one another. Human and Mutants don't get along, even in the younger generations. Now, the three other schools were
based on the power of mutagy. They were higher security. Shoto and I, were in Synnax.; the lowest ranked school for power. Second was Uyanda, and
first obviously was Ironil. Ironil was full of unstable mutants whos parents are extreme crime bosses; or, were. People thought Shoto and I were weak.
Shoto's power really does nothing without combat training; and mine? Well, mine is special. Mine only works because of the amount of metal in my
body. I can take the metal from in my body and use it to power myself up. Cause whatever I use it on to be strengthened. If I use it on my arms, I can
punch a punching bag into the next house over. Done it. I've never showed anyone except Shoto though. He says it's awesome, but I'm not so sure.
We lived a peaceful life. Wake up, eat breakfast, usually just rice. Go to school, come home, eat dinner, do homework, train, then go to bed. Nothing
crazy. I had one goal that was keeping me up at night though. I wanted to talk to a human.
After school, Shoto and I; whom are 16 and 15 at this moment. I am 16. Asked to go to the new noodle shop downtown. Mrs. Wu said yes. On the way
there, we see a young boy, sitting alone at the outside table of a yogurt shop. I can't sense a power force in him, so he's human. Now was my time.
As I begin to walk over to him, Shoto stops me, "What are you doing?! He's a human!" He says.
"I know. Nobody deserves to be alone." I keep walking. Shoto follows, unhappy. The boy sees me and turns towards me.
"Hi, I'm Drake." I say, with a big smile on my face I reach my hand out.
"What do you want? You know I am a human, right?" He responds, curiousity in his eyes.
"So? Nobody deserves to eat alone. Especially not yogurt! That's a friend thing!" I say, never lowering my hand.
"I don't have, nor need any." He says, his eyes now glisten with sadness.
"Listen, I don't believe in this fued between Mutants and Humans. Okay? I just want everyone to be equal here." I say, my hand still up.
"You're a big dreamer." He says, looking away from me.
"HEY!" A male voice yells from behind us. I turn to look and see Yumida Orincha, a Ironil student; one of the top. He has bright red hair, much brighter than mine. Black eyes that are just an empty abyss. Hes a much skinnier build.
"Yes?" I ask.
"What're you doing, Southernson?" He asks, getting right up in my face. He has two other guys with him. They appear to be twins.
"Trying to make a new friend, care to join? He's lonely." I say, with a smile.
"I don't need friends." The boy says.
"See? Akari doesn't need any friends, nerd." Yumida says. His name is Akari.
"Put this damn thing down now!" Yumida laughs as he smacks my hand down.
"That was rude, I am just trying to be nice." Now we have an entire croud surrounding us. We are on a decently busy street. Small, buildings very close
to eachother. The street is two way, one lane each.
"Don't worry, I get it." Yumida smiles back at his friends then looks at me with a devilish smile, "You want an easy first kill! Well, too bad, nerd! He's
mine!" He laughs and his friends laugh as well. My heart drops and my face gets red. I can feel the anger inside. I push it down.
"First kill? Are you kidding? You can't do that." I say, stepping closer in his face. He stands just a little taller than me, so i have to look up a little.
"I can't? Hmm, let's see, I walked over here and saw you two fighting! Trying to protect one of my own kind, I had to use force to deal with Akari! So
sad he didn't survive!" Being as he is a top student at the top school, nobody would rat on him. Too afraid. The rage, building up more and more.
I look down at the ground and clentch my fist.
"No." I say through my teeth.
"What did you say?" Yumida Orincha, a Pyromancer. His arms explode in a burst of fire. The heat is almost unbearable. I want to move my metal to
protect me, but can't show my cards yet.
"I'LL BURN YOU BOTH ALIVE, THEN!" He yells at full might. He grabs my left arm, but right before he does I move my metal to cover my arm. I feel
nothing. "Huh?" Yumida says. I take my right arm and put more metal on it, I pull it all the way back, and push with full force towards Yumida's
stomache, holding nothing back. "Oh shi-" He gasps right before contact. I hear his ribs crack, as he flys back into the building across the street. He
goes right through the window. There is silence amongst this huge croud. Akari turns and looks at me. My breath is short and i'm trying to catch it.
I just used 100% of my power, which still isn't much now, but it was enough. My metal is back in my body, but arm is stuck in the last point of contact.
"What the..." Akari starts to say before he is cut off.
"YOU TWO! KILL AKARI!" Yumida yells from the window. I don't know these two, so i have no idea what they do. They both raise their arms and squint
their eyes. The bench beside Akari begins to lift. They're telepaths. They thrust the bench at Akari at a very fast speed. I put the metal into my leg and
make one hard push and right before hitting the bench, make my metal go to my head. I hit the bench with my head and it flys into the yogurt building.
The twins looks amazed. My body isn't ready to push that hard that fast. I may move metal to protect and enhance, but it hurts my body to use force
with it on right now. I see Yumida walking across the street, now an entire fireball basically. I can see the rage. I.. must.. continue. For Akari! I stand
myself back up and begin walking towards Yumida. My leg, arm, and head killing me.
"DRAKE! YOUR SIN WILL BE THE DEATH OF YOU!" He screams when he sees me pushing towards him. He's holding his chest. I am sure I broke some
if not most of his ribs.
"My sins? Look at you, Yumida. We are all people! Everyone should be treated like that!" I scream back. We are getting closer.
"People?!" He laughs aloud, "They just want to control and conquer us! They want nothing else to do with us!" He stops in the middle of the street.
He has officially fully engulfed his whole body and is so hot that it hurts from probably 50 feet away where I am.
"That's because we act like this! They have to control these outragous actions! Or they will suffer more!" He begins running towards me, I plant my left
foot, the one I didn't use already. And I put my metal on my whole body. The amount of pain it causes is extreme. I can't hold it long. He raises his
arm and begins screaming while forming a giant fire ball. This blast will knock me extremely far back, I can't hold my metal form that long. I could die.
Right before he gets to me, he trips, and then a bucket of water is splashed on him. "Cool down, hotshot." Shoto comes out of his Invisible Form. I
remove my metal and walk over to him. I look down on Yumida and say, "My sin? If protecting the innocent is a sin, then I AM Sin." I say. The pain is
hitting me hard. I lean onto Shoto, "I got you, buddy." He says, grabbing onto me and sitting me down at the bench with Akari. He leans in and
whispers, "That was badass, Sin." I chuckle and cough in pain. I look over at Akari, who's staring right at me with his mouth dropped open.
"Y... You risked your life for me..." I smile at him and nod, "Of course I did. Like I said, I believe we should all be equal. That means no more striking
fear using mutagy." He smiles, and puts his hand out. "I'm Akari." I laugh and cough again, and force my hand up to his. The pain is immence, but it's
so worth it. "Nice to meet you."
"Step out of the way! Move along!" A deep voice says behind me. I twist my body and see three cops. One is helping Yumida, one is talking to the twins,
who are pointing at me; and one is moving our way.
"Drake Southernson, you're under arrest!" He says.
