Not bad but not good
"Reading this book was not satisfying. I have to admit that I have not read previous books in the series. As a stand-alone it did make sense but I have no idea what Emma is or what her powers are or why she decided to bury her past. But Emma is not our protagonist so I will leave her. I did not enjoy amount of flashbacks in the story. I loved flashbacks themselves, how they were written and how they made me see things play out. I do understand why they were used but it was frustrating reading a flashback every second chapter. It reflected on immersion and I had to skip most of the last flashback chapter. So much time was spent on showing us their previous history and I wish even half of that effort was spent on their relationship development in the present. This book lacks depth. Everything is happening on surface level, especially when it comes to Laura after escaping the prison. Exploring her emotions and consequences of her change would have greatly benefitted the story, would have added a soul to it. I loved the pace of the narrative after all the flashbacks were over and Laura was free. Overall reading this book felt like a haze. "

"This is the fourth book and the weakest of them. I really like the flashbacks from their childhood and the small missing pieces of the story of Em and Gabe and a part of the main story of this book (Laura and James), but some parts of the book lacks tempo or interesting content… it’s like treading water. Still, you want to know if Laura and James will finally be brave at the same time….. and know more about Cray, about Emma’s powers….So you continue to read anyway! I guess I will read about Meryl as well 😅"
