I

Winnie

I sighed in relief when the last bell rang, telling me that the school day was over. After tossing my notebooks and history textbook into my backpack, I hurried out of the classroom. Mr. Smith was shouting a few more problems he assigned for homework, but I could get them from my friend Jenny. All I was focused on was making it to the bus. You’d think as a junior, I’d be able to drive but nope. My mom wouldn’t let me get a car if my brother would just pawn it off.

I have my backpack and my cellphone, I do not need to stop at my locker. When I passed number 341, my locker, I knew I was nearing the end of the hallway. I couldn’t help but flinch when I passed numbers 376 and 377. Only because it belonged to them. The Wilson brothers.

Damien and Nathaniel Wilson were twin brothers in their senior years at my high school. Hot, popular, and rich. Of course they got what they wanted and who they wanted, whenever they wanted. I had no idea as to why they couldn’t leave me alone. I didn’t bother them. I stayed out of their way. Hell, I even did their homework last year.

I rounded the corner and descended the stairs to the first floor. Almost there. Just as I made it to the second set of steps the front of my backpack was pulled and I fell backwards into the wall. A rough pair of hands came to my shoulders and pinned me against the brick wall roughly. Damian. I could tell it was him because his attributes were a little more defined and thicker than Nathaniel’s. His eyes were grey too, piercing and cold all the while. A sinister smile pulled across his lips when a third hand connected with my neck.

Nathaniel. I looked to the side and saw hazelnut brown eyes burning into my skin as he moved my dirty blonde curls out of his way. The back of his fingers raked across my skin, causing painful goosebumps to spread across my body.

“Now where do you think you’re going?” Damian rasped. I could barely focus on what he was saying to me with his face just inches away from mine and Nathaniel taunting my skin. I felt nauseous. “I-I’m going ho-home,” I managed to get out before my breath caught in my throat. He just chuckled sarcastically.

“But I wanted to play, brother,” Nathaniel protested smoothly. The grip on my shoulders tightened. It would surely leave bruises on my skin. “Please, let go. That hurts Dam-” I whimpered before he cut me off. “Oh princess, we haven’t even had our fun yet.” His grey and gold flecked eyes grew darker, almost like he was being possessed but I knew the Devil was in him already. No one good could act the way these two did.

A pack of football players barreled down the narrow hall just in time to rescue me. Or for me to escape. They seemed to be nothing more than the twins’ lackeys, but nevertheless the two of them wouldn’t want to be late for their practice with sectionals on the way.

“We’re not done yet, little one,” Nathaniel murmured, his nose grazing behind my ear. They left, following the pack of boys in front of them. Their touches were lingering behind, it made my skin crawl and burn at the same time. It was becoming harder to breathe while I was hunched over trying not to hyperventilate. Hot tears pricked the edges of my eyes and threatened to spill over as memories of a much younger Damian and Nathaniel being kind to a much younger me played in my head…

“Oh Winifred… where are you?” I pulled my knees to my chest as I hid inside the tool shed in our backyard. I tucked my head underneath my arms to try and silent my sobs and sniffles as my older brother scoured the property for me. He was angry again and I didn’t understand why. I had woken up for breakfast and went to my room to play with my toys. It was a Saturday so mommy said I could stay in my pajamas.

I was brushing out my baby doll’s hair when Oliver slammed my bedroom door shut. It was so loud I nearly jumped out of my skin. “H-Hi Oli-” I whispered looking up into his olive green eyes. He walked over and bent down in front of me so we were eye level. “It’s my birthday Winifred. Did you forget?” He asked me, raising a single eyebrow. His head was cocked when he looked down to see my princess nightgown.

A cheshire cat smile spread across his pale lips before he stood up. “What are you gonna give me for my birthday, sis?” He asked while he undid his belt. “Mommy g-got you a new ph-phone,” I said, scared he was going to whip me again. “I didn’t ask about mommy. I asked about you.” He scolded before grabbing a chunk of my hair.

Oliver drug me over to my bed by my hair, and all I could do was thrash in his hold and cry for help. But no one would come. Mommy was at work and she said I didn’t have a daddy anymore. He sat on my bed with me standing between his legs. His grip never loosened, it felt like my hair was being ripped out of my head. “Now how about you be a good girl for me, and this won’t be as bad as lasttime. Okay?”

Last time? Oh no. “No! NO Oliver! Don’t make me!” Tears were streaming down my face as I begged him but he just started to laugh. I remembered what happened in a movie when a boy got hit there. I took my hands off of his large one and balled my tiny hands into fists. I punched him as hard as I could and took off running.

“You little bitch!” He groaned. I sprinted down the hallway and out the front door, looking for somewhere to go. No cars were in the driveway. My neighbors weren’t home either. I ran around to the backyard and saw the shed. Please be unlocked. This wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had to hide in there. I tugged on the door until it creaked open, and I ran inside. It was dark and dirty in there, and more tears ran down my face when I thought about the different kinds of bugs that were crawling around. This was better than the alternative though.

“Oh Winifred… where are you?” I pulled my knees to my chest as I hid inside the tool shed in our backyard. I tucked my head underneath my arms to try and silent my sobs and sniffles as my older brother scoured the property for me. Go away. Go away. I prayed. “God damnit, Winifred. Get out here now!”

He must have given up, or just got bored of his little game because after what seemed like forever, he was gone. I was exhausted from fear and crying for so long that I could fall asleep right there in the shed, but I didn’t want to get locked in here or have any spiders crawl into my ears.

I pushed the door open slowly, the sun creeped in and it stung my eyes. My feet were dirty and hurt from running around outside. The scorching sun caused heat waves to form on the pavement.

With tears still falling, I began to walk down the sidewalk, too scared to go inside. I wasn’t sure how far I had walked or where I was going but I didn’t stop. Mommy will find me and I’ll tell her what he did. I could see the park from the top of the hill so I ran over there to swing. When I got to the fence I bumped into someone.

I fell backwards on my butt and looked up at two boys standing in front of me. One of them bent down and helped me up while the other wiped a tear from my cheek. “Why is she crying, brother?” The smaller boy asked. Whimpers escaped my throat, threatening more tears to come when he asked.

“Hi princess, I’m Damian,” The other one said softly as we walked to the swings…

They took care of me that day. The day my seventeen-year-old older brother tried to hurt a six-year-old me again.
