This book is set one year before Gone Girl and then it will jump forward until the end of Gone Girl.
So they are in sophomore year here, some characters form Gone Girl won't be here and others will come in late.
I'm not romanticizing their story.

Also, it's nice to get an idea of how Veronica Reeves was before the trauma, the friendship between her, Louis and Nicolle.
You can read POISON before Gone Girl but
I highly recommend reading GG before this, it will work either way despite this being set a year before.
If you are wondering why you are supposed to read Gone Girl first it's because that book is set from Veronica's point, and if you want to know what happens after POISON, you will have to read Gone Girl 2 which is still from Veronica's point.
Also, POISON takes place in Sophomore and Junior year while Gone Girl takes place in Junior year.
