is known as the nervous nellie in hawkins. he’s quite awful at presenting school projects, trips over his own feet when walking to the front of the class or walking to the pencil sharpener, and stutters when called on. the list could go on— when maxine mayfield comes to hawkins,indiana from sunny california, it didn’t make it any better for him.
the fiery, fire-spitting red head girl could not have been the opposite of reese if possible. she holds every high score at the arcade while reese doesn’t play. she skateboards while he doesn’t because he's afraid to break a limb. she isn’t afraid to speak her mouth while he hardly gets a word out of his mouth.
max is utterly brave. she does everything reese can’t see himself doing— considering she took her step brother’s car, drove illegally, fought off demodogs, and most importantly, but worst of all, she pursued her crush.
