Chapter 1 - Me & her

“I’m coming Bella” I yelled while I went down the stairs.

It was the first day of summer break. The excitement was overwhelming but we didn’t care. After all the pressure we had been through in this last grade of high school we deserved to have some fun. We had planned everything. It was going to be the best summer ever. We were going to relax and not care about anything other than our happiness.

It was the first summer that we were officially done with school and the last before college and our parting of ways. Bella was my best friend. We had known each other since we were five.

When I was little my dad used to work a lot and I always ended up spending my time with my mom. I never complained tho. I knew my dad loved me and that he did all this extra work to raise me, provide me with everything I needed and look after our family. My mom and dad loved each other so much. They were the ideal couple. I always said that when I were older I’d find someone and our love would be just like theirs. EPIC . I always looked up to them because no matter what happened in my life I knew I could count on them.

The morning of my fifth birthday I woke up excited because we had spent days planning the activities we’d have to celebrate. Unfortunately, my dad was called to work and he ended up living in the morning just after I woke up. I barely got to see him. My mom saw how disappointed and sad I was so instead of doing what we had planned to do she insisted on doing something completely different so I would not miss him. And so we did.

We ended up making a basket and going to a park for a picnic. We brought fruit, sweets, juice, sandwiches and we also got ice cream! I was born in May and the weather was so lovely that day. However the reason I still remember that day in detail isn’t because of my dad or my mom its because that was the day I met my best friend, Bella.

After me and my mom ate the food we brought convinced her to play hide and seek. She didn’t really like that game cause she was always so scared that shed actually lose me. Or that a stranger would come by, see me hiding and kidnap me. I know, I know.. ridiculous. I didn’t think much of it. After all, why would anyone want to take a child away from their parents? Who would do that? Oh God, I was so clueless. I wish I was still like this. I wish our society was actually this pure.

Anyway back to the story, so I made my mom count and I tried to find a place to hide. Since the park wasn’t that crowded and there really was no hiding good enough that would make my mom not find me I decided to go hide behind some trees in the little forest area near the park. And that when it happened. Just when I got to the biggest tree and touched it and while I was out of breath from all the running around , a necklace fell right on my head. At first I was so confused but after a few seconds I heard someone trying to climb off the same tree. I turned around to face them.

It was a little girl. Her hair was a dirty blonde, her eyes blue like the ocean’s deep water. She was light skinned and her cheeks were red, probably because of all the climbing. She was shorter that me and honestly she looked younger. And tired. Very tired.

She looked at me good while walking toward me. I felt like she was studying me somehow. That was the exact way I used to look at the books my dad would buy me. Well, back then I only looked at the pictures since I hadn’t learned how to read yet, but still.

Eventually, she smiled at me.

“Hi, umm” she smiled even bigger “can you give me back my necklace?” she said while pointing at my hand. I turned my head to look at it and then reached out my hand to give it to her. I was shy back then. We were new in town, my parents didn’t have a lot of friends and I didn’t know anyone my age since school hadn’t started yet. I had no idea how to talk to other kinds so I remember feeling very nervous. She didn’t notice. She was busy looking at the necklace. I felt awkward and I thought of leaving. Just when I was about to do so she looked up to me and went “its pretty, isn’t it?” .

I looked at her and then at the jewelry in her hand. It didn’t look like much but it sure was beautiful. It was a blue and lilac heart hanging from a simple silver chain.

“ It was my mother’s” she said waking me up from a lethargy.

“She used to wear it every day. It was her favourite” she added now looking at me ready to with tears in her eyes. It seemed like there was a wave in the ocean that was going to destroy everything in its path. Little did I know back then that it weren’t just her eyes that were like that, it was her whole personality. Wherever she went problems would follow but her heart was pure, golden and full of love.

I invited her to come join me and my mom for my birthday picnic. She accepted and since then we have always been together.

We were now almost 18 years old . Adults. Didn’t seem like anything was different. Everything felt the same. But thankfully, our lives were never boring.

My name is Allison Edwards and this is a thank you to my best friend. Wherever you are, I’ll follow. I will always be there Bella.

I’ ll always be with you.
