Chapter 1

I ran as fast as I could down the dimly lit street. The sounds of shouting and footsteps could be heard behind me. My heart raced as I ran faster towards my house.

20ft.

15ft.

10ft.

I was almost there until a man grabbed my shirt and yanked me onto the floor. I was so close but so far away. My breath hitched as I felt the cold pavement against my face. I quickly flipped myself over and looked at the man who was looming over me. Leon Alvarez, a man that deserved to be feared. "I see I finally caught you. Did you think you could run from me" he said with a sinister smile.

5 hours Earlier

I run my hand through my long dark hair as I step off the bus. I start to make the dreadful walk back to my house. I knew what awaited me and all of my instincts told me to turn the other way. To run and not to look back, but I know that would never work. I would all to soon be right back where I was.

I reached my door and reached for the doorknob. All too soon my mother opened the door. "Your late." She said with the smell of alcohol on her breath. She had been drinking again, which only meant more trouble for me.

Tw abuse

I look down to the floor, "The bus was late." The next thing I knew I heard a smack and pain spread across my face.

"I don't give a fuck whether the bus was late. You better be here on fucking time you hear me boy. Now get your ass into the house before I show you what real fucking pain is." I nodded stepping past her not daring to look at her in the eyes. "And look at me when I'm talking to you boy." She screamed at me. I nod looking up at her.

"I fucking hate your face. It's just like your fucking fathers, disgusting." Before I could react the beer bottle that was in her hand was thrown at my back. The contents of the beer-soaked my shirt and the glass cut my skin. "Go to your fucking room." She then walked out the door probably to be with her junkie friends.

I walked to my room and quickly took off my shirt. My pale skin deeply contrasted against the blood on my back. Scars riddled my body from the years of abuse. My ribs could be seen and my body looked frail. My green eyes had bags under them and my hair fell into my face.

I grabbed a cloth from the laundry room and got the first aid kit. I carefully dressed my wounds so they don't get infected.

Setting the first aid kit aside I laid down on a bed too small for me and closed my eyes. I slowly drifted off to sleep.

I was in a dark room, I could hear laughing and moaning coming from the outside. I didn't know what was going on but fear slowly encased me. The door slowly started to turn and I moved to the back hiding from whoever was there.

My mother entered high and was drunk. "Youu know boyy. I fuucking hate youu. Youu look jusstt like you damn fatherr. You shouulld jusst die. Itd bee easierr foor meee." Her words were slurred and she stumbled around.

She grabbed a whip from of the walls and forcefully pinned me to the wall. Her blond hair shined in the moonlight and her dark eyes looked like the pits of hell.

She cracked the whip against my back as I collapsed to the floor. She continued to do so until my back was raw and tears ran down my eyes. She gave me a sadistic smile. "Thiiss iss what youu geet. Youu fuuckingg deseerve to sufferr."

She then grabbed a bucket of hot water and poured it against my back. I screamed from the scalding temperature as my back felt it was being ripped open.

She then walked out of the door leaving me to rot.

My eyes shot open as my heart started beating. It was just a dream. It was only a dream. My back still hurt from the glass that scraped me but I got up and grabbed my phone.

It was 7 pm.

Just as I was about to go lay back down my phone rang. Great, it was the devil herself.

I picked up the phone.

"What do you need," I said in an almost sarcastic tone

"Don't fucking talk to me in that tone boy. Go down to the Ridgewood and get me some damn alcohol and cigarettes." My mother sneered at me.

"Mom I'm not legally allowed to but alcohol."

"I don't give a fuck if I come home and there isn't alcohol or cigarettes you're gonna get it, boy."

I nodded and hung up without saying another word. I put on a black shirt and got my converse. Grabbing my jacket and putting it on as well.

Ridgewood was in the bad part of town and could be called the slums. It was dangerous to go there, especially at night. I thumbed my pocket knife and looked around to make sure no one was hiding in the crevices.

While I may be frail and looked skinny I had the height to my advantage being 6ft. If anything I could scare them off with my knife. Though avoiding any confrontation would be ideal.

Sadly my luck isn't too good. I entered Ridgeway and got my mom the alcohol and cigarettes she wanted. As I reached the counter that's when I saw a gang of guys ranging from 6ft to 6'4. I tried my best to steer clear from them and played for the stuff.

I walked outside and prayed they didn't notice me. Did I mention that my luck is pretty bad?

"Hey, would you look at this scrawny guy?" A bald man with tattoos and a muscular build put his arm around me. Shit.

"I'm sorry but I have to go," I said, pulling away from him.

"Hey man don't be like that why don't you come with us. It could be fun." He said he grabbed me again holding me tightly in place.

"Let go of me." I glared at the bald man and grabbed my pocket knife pointing it at him. I slashed it at him and quickly started running.

The man screamed at me and all of his buddies started running after me as well. I ran as fast as I could hoping that I could lose them.

I turned into an ally and navigated my way through the back streets hoping to get home.

I could still hear the men yelling from a distance and eventually, they stopped. Hoping I was safe I exited the alleyway and started walking back.

That was until I heard them yelling at me again, this time with backup I should have known they'd call back up, god damnit. Shit really can't be that easy for me could it.

I ran as fast as I could as I started nearing my neighborhood. I was close to my house. My heart racing and my feet pounding at the ground. The dim street lights give access to see.

"What the fuck do you want." I glared into his dark brown eyes. He had short-cropped hair and semi-tanned skin. He was well built and looked to be 6'5. He gave off this eerie feeling that made you want to hide. He smiled at me and put a foot on my chest.

"What do I want? You'll find out what I want soon enough, August." With that, he turned around and signaled his gang to follow him leaving me on the pavement alone.

How the fuck did that man know my name and what does he want from me? My head was swarming with questions but no answers.
