"Supposedly a politer version of Baptism By Fire, but still with the careful detail and wonderful descriptions that this great author puts into all his magnificent stories. Essentially a love story, set during the American Civil War in the eighteen hundreds. I was brought into the story immediately by my anger at the abject cruelty of Jeffrey Belding, a man who ruled his slaves, his horses, his household, by fear. His daughter, Elizabeth, was the complete opposite, kind, compassionate and benevolent. She was also intelligent enough to bring about the demise of her hated father. When the war ends and Joseph Forrester makes his violent entrance into the story, she immediately falls in love with him, much to the dismay of Betty, a black woman who is also her aunt. I found Betty to be a lovable, motherly woman who only has the interests of Elizabeth at heart, even though she comes across as a thorn in the flesh of the young lovers. How Elizabeth is rescued from the crafty Wheeler men, and also her brother, who was supposed to be dead, makes for a wonderful and exciting tale full of twists and turns. An excellent read."

"This book was interesting with the war and how people had to survive. Tricky subject to write about slaves but that was part of life back then. Your description of war with letters,sketches, and clothing were great. Reading your books and learning more about events of the past leaves me with the thought of how far we've come."

"John, first congratulations on submitting one of the best written and most creative stories of the civil war period...........This story takes place in the 1860's with an abusive Father against his new horse, later a rough patch with his Daughter Elizabeth. The war of words between the Father and Daughter had finally, after years of abuse, left both at odds, with the Father hitting his daughter and knocking her to the floor.....Andrew, a slave, came to protect Liz, punching the Father and knocking him down........A gun, by Liz, was hidden in the boiler so the Father could not use it to kill the slave that protected his daughter..........A decision was made by Liz to kill her father, when he would be returning from a poker game with Henderson and friends, by shooting him on the outskirts of the property...........several witness's were hidden, witness's to the killing. Another Slave, who was told to watch the horses, Samuel, had secretly followed Liz to the murder site of her father, also hidden, without anyone seeing him. He removed the body from the marsh and told his folks back at the mansion what had happened and they took care of the body......the other party who watched the killing, were hired by liz's brother, charles to kill the father as well........and lied to charles that they had done the killing to get paid..........the story continues but now, let me tell you, John, my results to your Book, "In Love and War". Excellent story..Excellent plot development all the way to the end of your book........lots of sub plots, twists and turns to an excellent written and conceived book.......your writing style and Technical skills are superb. One of the Best Stories by one of the Best Authors I have read in years............John, I read the whole book, and honesty am hoping to see more of your work. You are an inspiration to all Writers that perfection can be made........... william elliott"

"The characters are well created and pull you along through the story. The plot is well thought out, with some interesting turns. I was unsure what was going to happen, several times in the story, which is a grand point, as who wants to know they have figured out the story correctly...once they get to that part of it. That is why I say it has some interesting turns. I particularly liked the way Joseph was introduced into the story and the way the background characters slowly developed taking on strong personalities. I would happily suggest the story to others. It was not too deep in the war not too deep in love but gave you a Nice balance between. The author has done a wonderful job of building the set, surroundings, characters, and dialogue although they do repeat some of their thoughts, actions, and what they say. A touch of tightening up in this are would be improvement. Yet, as it stands it still a fun and engrossing read that I would suggest anyone"

"I did got confused about who's POV i was reading at the beginning of the book, but after i got used to the style it did got easier to follow. Overall, i did like the plot, the way the characters did developed and how they did interact. What i did like so much about this book is the fact that you showed us that everybody does have something to hide, but the right person will still accept and love you."
