Chapter 1: Fleur

Nephilim Dormitory, East Nicolaus, California, 12:07 AM

Girls Dormitory 3, The Plan’s Headquarters, East Nicolaus, California, 12:07 am

Silence engulfs the room like a deathly still. The saying “It is so quiet I could hear a pin drop,” seems to have originated from our dormitory, as quietly suffocating it is. It’s a wonder, truly, as to why I have never heard of a snoring nephilim who snores. The only sound in the room is the tossing and turning of a newly acquired halfbreed: Tanaquil Worth. I’ve heard that she has odd wings extending from her abdomen and that the wings were her ribs. She made more noise than any of the other half bloods, though I rarely cared to ask why.

My silent judging was interrupted as I remembered: I haven’t packed yet. It would be less than ten hours when I boarded into one of the cars and yet I hadn’t even began packing. Yes, I could have packed as soon as I found out I would be going on a pursuit, but I am a self-proclaimed expert at procrastination. I began to sloppily, yet quietly, toss objects into my suitcase as I began to think over tomorrow.

I’ve been assigned a pursuit. My eighth pursuit to be precise, but my partner to be is much more inexperienced than I. His name is Castiel, and he is a cambion, the offspring of a demon and a human. I suppose I shouldn’t judge considering I’m an abomination, but cambions get on every single nerve I have. It’s a wonder why the angel in charge of our pursuits chose to pair a nephilim with a cambion, seeing as we are such an unlikely pairing.

I suppose I should have gotten ready during the day, now that I think about it. Anyhow, training is one of my favorite things to do, and I wasn’t about to leave out a day of training. Now I tiptoe around sleeping halfbreeds and pack clothes and weaponry.

Often I wonder what the sweet relief of sleep would feel like. I’ve curled up in my duvet and closed my eyes before, but I never felt sleep. My “father,” Leliel is the angel of the night. I don’t Imagine I’ll be sleeping any time throughout my life, courtesy of him. Though I do imagine I shouldn’t complain, though, because cambions have to fight off the evil in their blood while I only have to wonder what sleep is like. I suppose some of us nephilims are just like humans in their self-absorbed worlds.

Now that I think of it, having a cambion as a partner might not be as bad as I originally thought. Cambions are known for having powers, such as the more prominent teleportation and super strength. It’s very rare for the cambions to have full power unless they give in to what the angels call “their inner voice.” The cambion I will be working with isn’t very old, which should work out in my benefit. Although if it doesn’t, then that will mean the cambion will have no regrets while they give in. Trusting the cambion could turn out to be more difficult than I am trying to convince myself.

Our instructors must want me to show him the ropes, I suppose, although it would be more beneficial for the cambion to have a cambion partner. It’s a shame so little cambions turn out to be good. Either way, I hope I do not fail.

As I look down into my suitcase, packed neatly and everything in its special place, I realize I forgot a couple of things. My flask was empty, as it was supposed to hold holy water, and my bible seemed to have gone missing. Now I realize that cambion boy has distracted me already in a way that could foil the mission.

I throw my duvet over the suitcase and go to leave. I needed to go to the supply room and grab the things that were amiss. I pass the oddity that was Tanaquil Worth, keeping my eyes downcast as I did so, and let myself out of the dormitory with no worries.

My steps fall into a rhythmic pattern as I walk through the empty hallways. Few people are up at this time of night. As I step into the last room of the hallway, the supply room, I hear a deep voice murmuring.

“One, angel blade, check. Two, holy water, check. Three, bible, check…” The male was listing things on a poacher’s list. As far as I knew, the only pursuit scheduled soon is Castiel Evans and mine.

“Castiel Evans, the inexperienced cambion,” I state, looking over the male and sizing him up. He was about six feet tall and dark haired with silver eyes. Castiel was fairly buff, and his skin was naturally tan… however his skin seemed rather washed out, like he was sick.

“Uh… hi? Who are you?” he chattered nervously.

“Fleur Corpis, the experienced nephilim, and your first partner,” I replied, pushing my bushy blonde hair away from my face.

“Ah, yes… The, uh…” Castiel seemed at a loss for words. “Call me Cas, please. I mean, if you want to. Oh, shit…” To my surprise, and his as well I suppose, I laughed. That honestly wasn’t what I expected I would do automatically. Well, I guess that proves how pitiful the cambion was.

“Well, partner, it seemed I forgot a couple of things.” I quickly snatched a flask of holy water and a bible off one of the shelves. “Be sure to bookmark your exorcisms.” With that tidbit of advice, I left the supply room. The only thing I can think after that encounter is how passive he was.

Well, what am I going to do with that pitiful, passive, weak cambion on a pursuit?
