A Wedding Without Love

*Elisabeth's POV*

So basically, today is my wedding—one I’m not exactly happy about.

Oh God! Just half an hour to go. Why isn’t my mom here yet?

As I was thinking, someone knocked on the door. Frustrated, I said, “Come in, please.” When I saw my mom, I immediately burst out in anger.

“Mom, why don’t you understand? It’s so simple!” I yelled.

“I won’t understand anything if you shout like that, sweetie,” she said with a confused expression.

“Okay… sorry,” I said, calming myself and taking a deep breath. “Mom, I really think this wedding is a mist—”

“Liz, we have already made enough mistakes,” my mom cut me off.

I rolled my eyes. I couldn’t believe she was doing this to her only daughter.

“Mom, I won’t fit into that family. Please try to understand.”

“Why?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.

I was losing my temper. I didn’t want to shout at her, but she was making it harder for me. Trying to build confidence, I said, “Because I’m not gold! And they only like gold!”

“What’s your problem, Elisabeth?” she raised her voice. I flinched at her outburst. She took a deep breath and said, “Liz, look, sweetie. They planned this destination wedding. They flew us all the way from London to Serbia. They spent—”

“I don’t care,” I cut her off. “I literally don’t care because I don’t love him, Mom!”

“But Liz, he’s good-looking.”

I rolled my eyes. “And what about his IQ, Mom?”

“But he’s well-settled.”

I laughed. “He’s better settled in his gym because that’s where he spends most of his day!”

“Dear, he’s your childhood friend. You’ve known each other for so long, and he likes you. Tell me, if that’s not love—”

“Mom, I can’t believe you. He loves only one thing in his life, and that’s his whey protein.”

“And for God’s sake, his nickname is Goldie! You want me to marry a man whose name is Goldie? Literally, Goldie.”

I struggled to control my laughter while trying to prove my point.

Mom finally sat on the edge of my bed and said, “Please, Liz.”

I was completely frustrated. “Please, Mom. Even if he were the last man on Earth, I still wouldn’t fall in love with him!”

My heart ached when I saw my mom’s face. She was hurt. After a moment of silence, she spoke.

“Love is not everything, Liz. You took your own sweet time to accept the proposal. How long do you want to wait?”

“Mom, what about Dad? He—”

“He abandoned us, Liz. He never cared to check on us all these years.”

“Exactly my point. He wants to meet me now, after all these years. There has to be a reason.”

Raising her eyebrows, she said, “If he had come without a reason, I wouldn’t have called him selfish.”

There was pain in her eyes.

She sat beside me and smiled warmly. “A bride should never frown like that. Now give your mother a smile.”

I felt blank, unsure of what to do. Her voice broke my thoughts. “Please? Smile for me.”

I gave her a small smile. “Good girl,” she said and walked out. “I’ll be back soon.”

After she left, I picked up a small, cute box placed on the table beside my bed. I turned the key, and soft music played—the one my dad gave me when I was a kid. As the melody filled the room, childhood memories flooded back.

He was so happy. I kissed his cheek, and he returned it with a smile. “Thanks, Dad. I love it.”

I put the box back and picked up my phone, playing the recording my dad had sent.

“I know I have no right to ask this, but I just want to meet you once, my dear. I want to see my Elisabeth.”

“Elisabeth!” someone called from behind. “Lucca looks so hot in his wedding suit. Come on, they’re waiting.”

I gave a sad smile and nodded.

It was a huge wedding. I wore a long white gown with off-shoulders. My hair was in a tight bun, the dress backless, reaching my waist. It fit perfectly around my curves. Red lipstick, black eyeshadow, and eyeliner—honestly, I looked beautiful.

My thoughts were broken by someone’s comment.

“Jesus! Josefina, your daughter-in-law is so beautiful.”

Lucca’s mom replied, “She’s not just beautiful—she’s well-mannered, well-spoken, and my Goldie’s equal in every way.”

My eyes landed on Lucca. He wore a dark navy-blue suit. His eyes roamed over my body with lust, making me uncomfortable.

Flashback

“I love you, Liz. Since we were kids. You are to me what whey protein is to my body.”

I tried so hard not to laugh.

He leaned closer and said huskily, “I can’t imagine my life without you.”

Then suddenly, he got on one knee.

“Will you marry me?!”

I laughed. “Huh?”

Suddenly, both our families appeared. My mom was smiling proudly, as if I’d won an Olympic medal.

“Mom, she said yes!” Lucca shouted.

“Liz, I’m so happy,” my mom said. “God has answered my prayers!”

“Mom, you need to listen—”

“Wait, Goldie—” I tried.

No one listened. People clapped, hugged me. I was stunned.

Josefina hugged me tightly. “I’m so happy you accepted my Goldie’s proposal.”

I pushed Lucca aside, but he froze me with, “I love you too, baby.”

What the hell was happening?

“Let’s take a picture,” Lucca said, pulling me closer.

End of Flashback

I stood at the aisle. The priest spoke, but I wasn’t listening.

“I do,” Lucca said.

When the priest asked me if I accepted Lucca Costa as my husband, I froze.

I looked into his eyes and finally said, “I don’t.”

And I ran.

I ran from my wedding. From my mom. From everyone.

I could hear Lucca calling my name, but I didn’t stop.
