Chapter 4

Flash back

0

4th grade class was noisily chatting on the bright yellow school bus carrying the kids to their field trip location. The bus was currently driving across Manhattan Bridge. Katy was sitting on the isle side of the seat while Rocky was kneeling on the seat and drawing a doodle of King Kong on the bus window.

0

Jack noticed what Rocky was doing while eating an ice cream bar, “You’re not supposed to be doing that, Rocky.”

0

Katy rolled her eyes at Jack’s statement. He was the class tattle-tale, “You done?” She looked up at Dave. “Ok, now watch, this,” As Rocky tried to impress his classmate Becky Barnes by lining up a doodle of King Kong with the Empire State Building through the school bus window. Rocky’s doodle overlaps the empire state building in the distance.

0

A couple of rows back on the other side of the isle, Katy stared up at the drawing in amazement. She smiled, “Rocky. That’s awesome.” Rocky and Katy shared a brief heartfelt smile before turning their gaze away. Cast eyes full of awe at the fascinating girl as Katy stared back at him. He couldn’t believe his good fortune when Katy showed an interest in him, Yet this sophisticated woman looked at him, singled him out as the object of her attention. Joe was in love, head over heels in love. He was already thinking marriage, even though they barely knew each other. Joe was positive this was a match made in Heaven.

“thanks,” As Rocky revels in his success, Jack gave a thumbs up to Rocky who wink in response. Jessica rolled her eyes and looked back down at the book she was halfway through when reading. It read The Bad Beginning, book one in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, “Actually interacting with her would be better than just staring at her, Rocky.”

0

Rocky turned around and sat back down on the seat with a slight bounce, “I just did talk with her. She said ‘that’s awesome’!”

0

Arya laughed, “Okay, but what’s her favorite color? Her favorite book? Food?” Dave just continued to stare at her. Arya sighed, “Okay. Here’s the deal, you tell me her favorite color, book title and food and I’ll help you ask her out.”

0

Dave broke out into a huge smile, “Really?!” Arya nodded, “Thank you!” He gave her a big hug and immediately began ways of figuring out how to ask Katy the questions.

That didn’t truly happen until 5 years later, when I came into the story. But let’s not worry about all that! This is Mystic Falls, the greatest place on Earth.

Basically, we’re like a family. Even though I haven’t haven’t met her yet. Alright, let’s do this one last time. My name is Rocky Morningstar. Like any hero, let’s just say that I was an orphan, a wizard put me on my uncle’s doorstep, they raised me in secret, and then I went to a special magic school where a beard man regularly tried to murder me with voodoo. Okay, that’s not true...but I do have an uncle and 3 fathers! Several, actually! Anyway, seriously, I joined their infamous ghost buster theme of superheroes at 17 years-old, where a few training served me up fresh and death free—with a side order of superpowers. There were a few other guys stuck in there with me, and they had a betting over who would kick the bucket and took me in. They gave me a name Rocky, and because I’m a clever girl and because my name needed some kind of logic behind it, I then adopted my father’s last name Morningstar. What? No, I disagree, it’s not a reach at all. I soon adopted the moniker The Awesome One. A hunter and an angel, a young couple that nursed me back to health after an early failed job. Some may say that this two brothers tried to kill us both in an attempt to stabilize the universe if ever we were killed., but guys, come on. I’m the real deal here.

0

I then got an assignment to kill a British operative named Albino (important moment readers, I’m meeting my best friend aka my brother here) but decided to kill everyone else instead. Doing this made my hunters...unhappy. So they tried to kill me.

0

Luckily, a special agent named Smith—who’d been spying on me to try and convert me into some kind of messiah protector— to helped some unnamed young but beautiful woman. Weird subplot, I know. And for ten years, I’ve been the one and only awesome enough to admit it. I’m pretty sure you know the rest. You see I saved my city, fell in love, I got married, saved my city some more, maybe too much, my marriage got testy, made some dicey life choices -- don’t invest in a ghostbuster-themed of superheroes...Then like fifteen years passed blah blah blah super boring, I broke my back, a fist flew into my face, I buried my younger brother Jack, my ex and I split up. But I handled it like a champion. ‘Cause you know what? No matter how many times I get hit, I always get back up. And I got a lot of time to reflect and work on myself. Flash forward, I’m in my apartment doing pushups, doing ab crunches, when this weird thing happened. I got a call from my uncle. And I gotta’ say, weird things happen to me a lot. But this was real weird...You see when I was in Mystic Falls... things were different. That until, I met someone. It’s funny that we only ever see two of her. It’s almost like the studio couldn’t afford another X-Men. She was kind of... perfect for me. It was like looking in a mirror or something.

But I have a feeling the thing that brought me here, was the only thing that change my life forever. You wanna know what happened next? Me too.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
