Searching

A restless atmosphere reigned supreme throughout the desolate dorm, a thick layer of dust having gathered on every surface. But in the seemingly forsaken room a petite child rested silently slumbering upon the worn tattered remains of a timeworn sofa. The child stirred restlessly so close to the edge, “no, no” stuttered a frightened voice unwillingly pouring from the child curled into a ball as if to shield themselves from an imperceptible threat, an alarming wail escaping the constricted clutches of the child’s tight dry lips.

It was then that the child got too close.

A sudden jolt of the harsh floor smashing cruelly against her mutilated back, a venomous sting ringing across her ice cold skin that she was all too familiar with, forcing her mercifully to awaken from her torment. Through the darkness light flickered across her drowsy, grimy face as she sat, her face a façade of no emotion.

The light had unintentionally revealed her pleading green eyes far too old for someone so young, however what arose from that plea was a strength that could move mountains, conquer cities and bring grown men to their knees. They told the story of someone who had been damaged, but never defeated.

She sat there seemly silent unbound from the nightmare of her sleep, life is not that kind. The malicious memories flickered by before her causing her hands to clench. For years she had been abused, neglected, caged away by those who should have loved her, protected her. They failed her. They had punished her for being who she was for that she would never forgive them.

Determined to no longer bare the burden of her memories she stumbled on weakened legs, painfully she staggered from the pit of darkness. As she opened the peeling wooden door light knocked into her like a feather cushion, resulting in her releasing a satisfied breath she hadn’t realised she was holding. In the distance she could see the tall trees, the entrance to her liberty.

She wanted to run, she wanted to sprint, but her legs whimpered in complaint so to her dismay she walked haunted with dread that someone or something might attempt to halt her. That someone from the past might discover her, rip her away back to her hell. Her façade never faltered as she made her journey, a gaze deadlier than a killer whale.

As she approached the shadows of the trees everything seemed to fall away apart from these piercing grey eyes so deep she could have lost herself within them her once hateful glare turning soft and tender, “please” she whispered so low that no human could ever have heard her. For a reason unknown to her she felt connected to the wolf who watched her with caring eyes.

The wolf slowly treaded forwards, careful not to frighten her until the wolf stood before her looking up with those enticing grey eyes, it then lowering its head.

Hesitant the girl nervously reached out her hand, deliberately running it through his beautiful soft grey fur. Her walls slowly began to crumble away, annoyed that she allowed this to start she sadly pulled back her shaking hands from the wolf.

Anxiously she looked around the space around her with a sole slicing gaze, she was still fearful of those lurking in the shadows… but there was also resentment that was eating away at her insides.

I will always protect you Katrina echoed a protective voice, the emotion behind those words that echoed through her mind almost brought her to tears. Stunned she watched the wolf with large eyes, it was impossible but so was she.

She was shocked to realise she felt safe. Looking deep into those honest grey eyes she had no doubts that the wolf spoke the truth, that he would never allow any harm to befall her.

A small smile slipped onto her face as she bit her bottom lip to try and prevent a giggle from escaping when she heard the wolf purr. The wolf pulled back turning away from her instigating a piercing pain of rejection to slice into her chest, until the wolf halted its movements looking back at her expectantly.

Follow me cor meum you have nothing to fear, curiously she watched him unsure of what he had just called her after all it definitely wasn’t in English.

Even through the green eyed girl was afraid of what the future might hold she followed the mysterious wolf unknowingly wandering towards her new pack, her new home.

Izzy Rhae : By far one of the best werewolf books I’ve read. Definitely some plot holes that confused me, like does birth control preventative options not exist? Or like why wouldn’t they leave the area during the purge. A little clarification might have helped. But overall that doesn’t matter because the world...
