Reflection

The day my reflection betrayed my eyes was the same day I realized I had given far too much control to my inner demon. He wore a brilliant smile, bright blue eyes, and perfectly white, fluffed hair, all on a face that wasn’t his. My face twisted into itself, grimacing at the sight before me in the mirror. It wasn’t right.

I’d given him a name, Dex, hoping I’d understand my emotions better. That sense of hope drained out of me like the color from my cheeks. Here I was, clinging to that ounce of hope.

As quickly as he had come, he disappeared within a blink of an eye. Nothing more than a mere hallucination, or my mind’s eye playing tricks on me. Relief washed over me, but the tight feeling constricting my chest wouldn’t leave. Sweat still coated my palms. I glanced at the mirror again.

Once.

Twice.

Yet another time to be certain he was completely gone.

The facade of flawlessness had long faded. Unlike Dex, my hair was messy, untamed. There were dark circles under my eyes where his skin had gleamed. Even with our differences, I couldn’t shake off the fact he was me, or that he was taking the form of me before my very eyes. Myths of the paranormal spread in whispers where I lived. Myths I largely ignored, given that they didn’t affect me. After all, they were myths and nothing more. Spending time worrying about them would’ve been nonsensical.

Only now did I have the right to worry over such things.

Only now, when the faintest whisper of my name, Syx, echoed through the empty halls of my house, was when I worried.
