Chapter 1
When she was just six or seven. The pretty little girl was in there with the café owners' permission as they were her parents. The daddy was upstairs doing things. He was a gentleman with gentry habits and did not want for anything. The world owed him one. Lazy and now sick with the disease he was accustomed to world wary sympathy.
"Creditors are here."
"I have nothing to fear tell them to go away."
The mother was trying to cook and have sex. The café was lewd and lawless but the food did appear and it was nourishing as well. Because there is always someone to cover the tracks of rotten behaviour. When the thing which most parents do not want to happen did happen to this little girl.
She lost her virginity in that café. She lost her virginity when very young. Much did happen afterwards but without much complaint. Her husband was not much to see as he became her husband he ran afterwards leaving her and making her give up her own children.
Set her to work to make do in that café the money she had not earned. Paupers' lives are that they have to do what to do for so little. She always remained a child. She did not grow up. She could never handle responsibility. P wanted someone to look after her.
A child prostitute is someone lost somewhere the soul is lost because the whore inside her was not satisfied because she thought something better she deserved. She went to everything with a will only to give it up as soon as her interest expired.
Projects and hopes are unwilling to work.
A marriage where the husband did not even stay.
Children starved out. Farmed because she is unwilling to be there.
And she did it because the foolish woman the mother did not see it coming. The males are always eager for more. Waiting at the door as the youths had waited for her mother and father. The baked puddings were not the answer. The innocent blood the naïve blood the bloody war that ensued. Savings and the dearest wish.
The little girl was a child who did not want to cause a fuss. She was an obedient child and disliked attention. But she was not like that really she craved attention in her own quiet way. Why she did not want to cause offence to the paying customers? " Customer always right."
Because they were allowing the mother to hoard money in order to do something important. Important they were moving next door to get rid of the creditors.
She was helping her mother. She had to heal her mum. She did not want to deny her mother the helping hand. Being a good girl she did not ask for much money. The customers gave her some. She did school with that and the rest she got clothes with and was almost a lady now.
The husband broke her.
When something bad happens the happiness that brings the disaster must end. The whole thing must end thought her mother. She was now in a café with a man who no longer bothered to hide his real needs.
The family has to become family. Her daughter must escape this life. The lies told must be cemented.
We believe that children should have protection. Abuse is never to be healed but the thing was the mother was a woman who shouldered the blame for everything and she knew about it the father did not. He was upstairs having males.
Being married to someone who is not in love with one is a sore most Turkish women have to bear. Because they have arrangements. Never mind let us cut to the chase. Have a doubt.
The parents did not mean any harm.
Wife battering is such a harsh word to describe what happened to P and she got it so bad. She looked like the end had come she had lost weight and was always in pain with bruises.
Then P said she was okay with movement with eloping somewhere safe. She disliked now her handsome husband who was seen trying to wolf down someone else.
"Look out there is a triangle coming ahead of this again."
Then she became known as the new Zeks. P had turned to Zeks impossible said dad as he read his newspaper. Her dad had died her mother was next door and there seemed to be imposters everywhere. They got on well together back then. Dad was impossible he had the jitters that attacked them all the time and did not seem himself, His diabetes had shot up 95% and he had to go to the hospital in order to live.
Maudsley had another inmate.
P now known as Zeks was so pleasant to me asking me when I was leaving. We had bought the house now our own and she assumed we did not have the right to stay. Having no head for money.
"I was caught on fire." Sighed the woman in place of Zeks. Her aplomb was so bizarre. " I was ousted from being a mother. My children where are they?"
"We are here mother," I replied back then.
She looked at me with sore eyes tearful and sad.
"No, you are not."
"Well, the sad fact is I am your daughter."
"Not true."
She had gangrene. The fool must go to the hospital they sent her to one. She outwitted them and came back.
"Whores have feelings too." She would say and say again.
I worked at the cafe for six months and was exhausted. I disliked working on my own and there was nobody to do the work. The girls B and Z had to go to school. I would never allow them to work there when they are so young.
We are legal citizens but we do not like to share what we do for a living there in the cafe because the men are avoiding payments of a certain type. They are all poor with numerous wives and all that. And the women are battered wives because they have to pay the rent and food for the family.
The man comes at most moments and takes what he has a right to. He is the head of the household. Why because they have an agreement she married him. But he has many women wives because he is allowed to marry four.
Mother was now the cowed she said she would get me.
In her place was adding machine counting every penny we did. Sheer accountancy.
Her hold on life was so threadbare I was worried.
"Worries kept me creeping up the work was not over until about 9 in the evening because of the preparation that needed doing. Staff was sometimes one or at most me. That they disliked the work and loved the money.
"Nothing doing I am not going to work with your mum I work only with you." Snarled the woman called the second jobber.
"Went to Japan and fixed the problem was married in a jiffy. Had the divorce because in a moment of weakness told him the whole story," said Zeks or P. I did not know if she is delirious or something.
Now we have equal rights the wives have began to multi marry. Polygamy costs money.
"So he dumped you?"
"Two children and one in the tummy not likely."
"Where is he then?"
"I am not falling for that trap again. My lips are sealed."
Then she would get back at someone in her sleep as she kicked the sheets and made offence like remarks. When she woke up she would ask how long I had been there.
"Not long here is your toast mother."
"Well help me to the toilet."
I did had to there was a pile to do downstairs and the thing was getting too much even for the young and strong like me.
The blood made her think of the bacon and then the meals and then the swearing of her pa. He was doing his business in by having boys upstairs and she did not care for them herself. They were nicely dressed.
They were there before us.
I had no time to be anything but caring.
I ceased to care some years later.
She was a woman of prettiness and she had to be in there when they were and her mother was a woman of meanness because she did not mince only meat. She just did not understand.
Adding machine went and wept.
She bite more than she could have chew because when the family was to be torn apart they would have nowhere to live. So the mother had bought the second door and did it better. Bitterness gushed through me and through her. When she found out that her child in Cyprus had been molested she had her married right away. To the boy who had done it. When that nearly broke her up she wept and wept but she stayed put. She would not budge from the pot of gold. Her child when she lost her virginity was about eight.
"What happened to them?"
"Embezzled her ex husband?"
"The expected bonus did not appear the poverty did not go away."
