Prologue

Prologue

Two Thousand and Three, Outside of Haven Ohio

The armored wolf heard the sound of snarling behind him. He looked over his shoulder. There were several armored wolves chasing him. They were followed by armored wolves in their human forms. He looked ahead. He had to get to his followers before it was too late. Sure the girl had just been born as a human with dormant armored wolf genes but his followers needed to know what to do until the time was right. He jumped over a fallen tree and sniffed the air.

Azrael’s eyes widened. He was close to Denthro’s camp. The camp had a new camp director but he knew that Denthro was planning on returning there within the next few years. If he was caught by the armored wolves at Denthro’s camp and Denthro found out, there was a good chance that Denthro would start investigating. Azrael couldn’t have that. Everything depended on the girl being kept a secret until the time was right.

The armored wolf did a sharp turn to the left. He had to get out of there before he risked blowing everything. He heard the snarling getting closer. He growled. He couldn’t let the armored wolves see him using a portal. It would give the council an excuse to search the homes of their people. Only council members and trusted high-ranking armored wolves were allowed to have amulets to open portals. Even though he wanted their people to realize that the council was corrupt, he didn’t want them to endure having to be searched as his own followers had been.

He stopped running. “Amara.” He said in his mind. He needed to get a message to his second-in-command before he was captured.

There was silence for a short bit before he heard a response in his mind. “We’re waiting for you at the meeting point.” A female voice said. “When can we expect you to arrive?”

There has been a change of plans.” Azrael said in Amara’s mind. He knew it wouldn’t be what Amara wanted to hear but she understood the best out of all of his followers. She would follow orders no matter what. “I won’t be able to join you and the others. The council’s secret police knew where I went. They’re chasing me even as we speak. It’s just a matter of time before they catch me.” Azrael looked over his shoulder. The snarling was louder now.

The girl is still the key to my plans.” Azrael told Amara in Amara’s mind. “When the Black Wolf Society succeeds at releasing Fenris, find her. Help her defeat Fenris before bringing her to me.” Azrael didn’t need the girl just yet. Not until after Fenris had been defeated.

Azrael, you can’t let yourself be captured a second time by the council.” Amara said in Azrael’s mind. “If the council captures you again, they will lock you up for eternity and never let you out.”

Azrael shifted into his human form. “I know for a fact that I will be released one day.” He said confidently in Amara’s mind. He knew that once Fenris was released, the armored wolf world would fall quickly to the Black Wolf Society. That was when he would make his move to escape. Both sides would consider him too valuable to kill and he could use that to his advantage.

Azrael, it’s too dangerous.” Azrael could hear Amara’s growl in his head. “What makes you so sure that you’ll be released? The council or the Black Wolf Society could decide to kill you instead.”

Azrael was about to respond when he saw the secret police of the armored wolves, both human and armored wolf alike, surround him. “Amara, you just need to trust me on this.” Azrael replied in Amara’s mind. “Just please do whatever you can to help her when the time comes.” Azrael then smiled at the secret police armored wolves. “I’ve chosen to surrender.” He announced as he raised his hands above his head.

One of the armored wolves stepped forward and shifted into Lael. “What were you thinking Azrael?” Lael asked. He couldn’t believe that his own foster brother would try something stupid like trying to break out of prison before running away.

Azrael looked at his foster brother. “I was thinking that if I exiled myself to the human world, then the council would stop hunting me.” He lied. The last thing he needed was a council member to know the truth about why he had gone to the human world.

Lael just glared at Azrael. He could tell that there was something that his foster brother was keeping from him. Azrael was a gifted liar. If he had really wanted to disappear into the human world, he would have done a better job at finding a place to hide, not go to a town that had had armored wolves come and go over the years. Lael wondered what Azrael was hiding. Lael looked at the secret police. “Arrest him and bring him back to Howling City.” Lael ordered them before he looked at Azrael. “Azrael, you have been charged with treason against the armored wolves and will be locked up in the dungeons. You will never see the light of day again.” Lael didn’t want to lock Azrael up but he had no choice in the matter. He had to stop whatever it was Azrael was planning before it was too late.

Azrael allowed the secret police to put handcuffs on him. He kept his eyes on Lael. “I don’t regret what I did.” Azrael said. “One day, you will see what my sister and I did and hopefully, you will be there to see how my plans play out.” He smiled as four secret police guards escorted him away.

Lael looked around. He knew that they were close to Denthro’s camp. He sniffed the air. The only armored wolves that were close by were his secret police and Azrael.

“Sir, is something wrong?” One of the secret police guards asked.

Lael turned to the remaining secret police. “No.” He replied. “It’s nothing.” Still, he looked around one last time before he left with the secret police. There would be time to investigate the town later on.
