Chapter 1

Of all the wishes Tom had made in his life, this one had to be the one that came true. Not the one where Tom had won a billion dollars in a jackpot he had never played, or the model girlfriend who had superpowers, or the wish he had made as a child to be 10 ft tall and as fast as the Flash, but instead, he got this one; the fucking zombie apocalypse…

Tom sat, the lone survivor, on the edge of a bridge overhanging an abandoned highway, contemplating his next move and talking to himself as he often did these days. His choices whittled down to either North into the city or South into the woods; the former reigned. Tom made his way North along the highway littered with abandoned cars and all sorts of trash blown in from the winds. There were a few of the flesh-eating creepers but Tom paid them no mind, either being too far from him or stuck in a random car here or there.

Still, he pressed on, keeping his hand on the .357 six-shot revolver his grandfather had given him two years ago. Six months ago, he had not seen himself using the pistol, until his neighbor Miss Riggs had broken through the back door and tried to make an evening snack out of Tom and his grandmother Miss Sue.

Tom had just gotten home from college and was in the shower when he heard a commotion on the main floor. He ran down the flight of stairs to meet face to face carnage with a much paler, smellier Miss Riggs whose face had been covered in what appeared to be a cherry pie. When Miss Riggs had tried to chomp Tom’s shoulder, she met a hefty push from Tom that made Miss Riggs fall flat against the corner of his grandfather’s old study desk. Miss Riggs’ head split in a horrifying show of gore, which made Tom a little sick, but no worse than what he had seen on TV or video games. When Tom walked into the kitchen to check Miss Sue, it was apparent that Tom was not Mrs. Riggs's first choice in delicacies.
