Murder mystery on the frontier (of space)
"When I first started reading, it was a bit slow; though only because it was so information intense and fast-paced in trying to describe how this complex galactic corporation/government like entity controls known space. I would suggest maybe adding a preface to better educate the reader to help avoid the confusing information storm, but after that; wow! The narration style was captivating and descriptions of places and event were thorough and vivid. Once Harry disembarked the shuttle onto Magnum-4 the action took-off and I had a hard time not staying up all night to keep reading. Harry, our protagonist, goes from a wimpy, Directorate flunky (and in his time's the equivalent of a paper-pusher) on a less than desirable business trip to bring back a high-ranking, wayward member Lydia Thompson to Earth Prime, to a frontier homicide detective. His initial job to bring back Lydia is immediately sidelined when he is greeted to the news that Lydia's lover, and Magnum-4 kingpin, Steve Somerset, has been murdered. On other planets this would not be seen as big news, but on Magnum-4, crime doesn't really exist; the people want or need for nothing, as long as they work. With a toxic atmosphere and Terra-forming only used under domes for mining and living, there is no place for prisoners. anyway. Those who break the rules are quickly eliminated, and the inhabitants of the planet are, for the most part, well behaved, model citizens in a wild-west-like space frontier. Harry's job goes from inter-planetary errand boy to homicide detective when Lydia puts him on the case of figuring out who murdered Steve. In the end, Harry solves not only Steve's murder, but two others and discovers his true abilities and self."
Thrilling new frontier adventure SciFi crime novel
"A real page-turner. The main character takes getting used to which retrospectively is a good thing. Harry evolves quite a lot and the more you read the more you appreciate his intelligence. The setting is special to say the least. Imagine you have enough money so that everybody can have all they would ever want ... materially speaking. Would humans be happy? Now, this book is not some utopia fantasy, but a straight hard murder mystery in an environment with very different rules which force you to think differently. I definitely recommend you to read the book. I just ordered the sequel "Do Androids weep magnetic tears" - a cheesy title to be honest ;-) but I am looking forward to meeting Harry and Quincey again. Too bad that you can get both books only as paperback right now. I'd have preferred to buy it in iBooks or in another eBook format as a fallback. Eric - thanks and please keep on writing."
A very enjoyable sci-fi murder mystery
"I enjoyed this so much I immediately bought (and read) the sequel from Amazon.ca - and am eagerly awaiting the third installment. Since this is a review and not a synopsis, I'll share my impressions rather than write out a condensed version of the plot. There were enough plot twists and turns to keep me guessing and engaged right to the end of each book. I liked that the characters changed and developed as the story progressed. I did find a moment here and there when I felt as though I was being preached at regarding certain cultural morals and ethics a little heavily. I'd prefer the author to allow the reader to make up his or her own opinions on such matters in a work of fiction. There were also a significant number of grammatical / formatting errors (such as no space whatsoever between the period at the end of a sentence and the first word of the next sentence). I suppose those could be introduced in the conversing of the manuscript to the eBook format, but surely it could be reviewed and corrected before distribution. Overall though, I experienced far more delight than frustration. I would definitely recommend this book and it's sequals."
Exciting and enchanting
"This is a very unusual sci-fi mystery. I enjoyed the suspense which was present throughout the story. I loved how I never knew what to expect from the characters. This made the story thrilling and made me suspicious of everything and everyone. You have a great style of writing – one which captivates you and completely engages you into the story. My eyes were wide open throughout the whole story and in some scenes I felt like I wasn’t breathing – that’s how exciting it was. I was a bit surprised that Lydia decided to leave in the end, but it does seem logical when she and Harry explain the reasons. I was thrilled that Allyson agreed to go with Harry and this little romantic moment fits great into the story. This was a great reading experience for me."
