Being stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the main roads was a nightmare that she couldn’t bear. The aggressive drivers were enough to give anyone a migraine. So, instead, she took the longer route, driving down Stone Valley Road’s winding, tree-lined streets.
As she turned onto the road, the chaos of the city faded away. The air seemed fresher, the moonlight brighter and more peaceful. The street was almost car-less, a rarity in the city. She could roll down her windows, let the breeze play with her hair, and take in the beauty of the foothills.
It was her little escape route; even though it added an extra hour to her commute, Allison wouldn’t have it any other way.
As she continued down the road, a sense of calm washed over her. She knew that no matter how hectic her day may be, she would always have this peaceful drive to look forward to.
Allison sat in her car, lost in deep thought.
Suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted by a loud rumble. It sounded like thunder – a motorcycle zooming past her car on the empty lane beside hers.
The rider wore all-black leather gear and had his helmet visor down so she couldn’t see his face. But there was no denying that he looked cool and confident as he sped off down the road at an alarming speed. Allison watched as it disappeared into the distance, leaving behind a dust and exhaust fumes trail.
Allison couldn’t help but admire him.
‘Boys and their toys,’ she thought with a shake of her head. But at the same time, she felt a twinge of concern for his safety. Motorcycles were dangerous vehicles, after all.
She let out a sigh and turned back to face the road ahead.
“Please be careful,” she whispered, knowing he couldn’t hear her.
With another shake of her head, Allison focused on driving again.
Every week, at the exact hour, the same motorcycle rider would speed by, and each time, Allison would send a silent wish for his well-being. She had witnessed him pass by numerous times, and she couldn’t help but pray for his safety every time.
Allison was having a particularly hectic day at work.
She got into her car and started driving towards Stone Valley Road and focused on getting home quickly.
Allison was in a hurry, so she increased her pace. Just then, the motorcycle zoomed past her again, making her jump in surprise, but Allison was too focused to remember to pray for his safety. With barely any other vehicles on the road, she drove more urgently than usual.
As Allison drove a few more miles, something caught her eye on the side of the road—a piece of metal. Up ahead, she squinted her eyes and gasped in shock. She could see a mangled bike on the side of the road.
With a sudden jolt, she hit the brakes, brought her car to a stop, and jumped out.
Allison’s heart dropped as she remembered the motorcyclist who used to race past her every day. She couldn’t shake off the feeling that something terrible had happened to him.
She sprinted towards the figure lying on the unforgiving pavement, not caring about the cold or anything else but helping them.
“Sir! Sir, are you okay?”
She called out to him, her voice full of concern and fear. With shaking hands, she pulled out her cell phone and dialed 911.
“Hello? Yes, a man has just been in an accident,” she stuttered, giving the operator a brief summary.
After hanging up the phone, Allison hesitated momentarily, her hand hovering over the motorcyclist’s helmet cover. Her heart raced in her chest as she debated whether or not to open it and see his face. But when she finally mustered the courage to do so, she was struck by the sight before her.
The man lying on the ground was undeniably handsome, with chiseled features and a strong jawline. His hair was dark and tousled from the accident, giving him a rugged, yet somehow still perfect, look. Allison couldn’t tear her eyes away from him.
But as she studied his face, his eyes were closed. She couldn’t help but wonder what color they were behind those shut lids. Were they blue like the ocean, green like a meadow, or brown like melted chocolate?
Shaking her head to clear her mind of such trivial thoughts, Allison focused on her original concern: his well-being. With gentle hands, she lifted the helmet off of his head.
“Please be okay,” she whispered under her breath.
A wave of relief washed over her as she saw that he was conscious and appeared to have no major injuries. Despite the chaos and fear of the situation, Allison couldn’t ignore the fluttering feeling in her stomach at being looking at this mysterious man.
The man stirred and gradually regained consciousness. His eyelids fluttered open to reveal a pair of piercing blue eyes that reminded Allison of the clear sky on a summer day. As he gazed back at her with amazement, she couldn't help but notice the depth and intensity of his gaze.
He winced in pain, causing her heart to ache.
"Are you okay?" she asked in a worried tone, taking in his disheveled appearance.
He groaned in response, trying to sit up but failing. "Don't move, you've been in an accident," Allison said quickly, her mind racing as she assessed his injuries.
"Am I...dead?" he asked, fear creeping into his voice.
She reassured him, "You're going to be okay. Help is on the way," placing a hand on his shoulder.
But slowly, a look of panic crossed his face. "Am I...crippled?"
"What matters is that you're alive," Allison said softly, offering him a comforting smile despite the worry gnawing at her insides.
His breath caught in his throat as her words sank in. Despite the pain coursing through his body, he couldn't help but feel butterflies fluttering in his stomach at her presence.
"I'm here; everything will be okay." Her gentle touch on his face was like balm for his troubled soul.
Tears began to stream down his cheeks, overwhelmed with gratitude for her kindness and comfort.
"Thank you for being here with me," he said through sobs, squeezing her hand tightly.
He was a fully grown, strong, and intelligent man. Yet, in this particular moment, he was nothing, just a man trapped in a terrible dream, utterly powerless to take action.
“Why? Why did this have to happen to me?” he cried.
Allison remained silent, offering comfort through her presence as he cried. Her own eyes filled with tears as she watched him. She was grateful to be here, able to help this motorcyclist who had gotten into an accident. It didn’t matter that no one else was around; she was just glad she could be there for him in his time of need.
She wiped his tears, and eventually, the sadness passed, and they were left in quiet contemplation.
The luminous moon behind her created an ethereal halo around her head, adding to her resplendent appearance. She was stunningly gorgeous—almost too perfect to be real. With honey-blonde locks and the most mesmerizing green eyes he had ever beheld on a woman, he couldn’t help but wonder if she was an angel in disguise.
He inquired, “May I know your name?”
“You won’t remember me,” she stated.
“I promise I won’t forget you. I’ll always remember until I die.”
She was taken aback by his words.
“Don’t ever say ‘die’ again.” She warned him sternly.
He chuckled softly. “Then please tell me your name.”
“First, promise me that you will never again ride your bike recklessly,” she said firmly.
“Have we met before? Do you know me?” he asked, confused.
“No, we haven’t. But I have seen you riding your bike on this route multiple times. It may seem strange, but in a way, I feel like I know you. And every time I see you racing so fast, it worries me. I always pray for your safety. And today, when I forgot...this happened.” She looked down with sadness as if blaming herself for the accident.
How fortunate he was. He never imagined encountering such an exquisite stranger on a quiet road at night.
What could this stunning woman possibly be doing on a desolate path? As Keith pondered the improbability of this situation, he couldn’t help but question its reality.
Perhaps it was simply luck, or maybe it was karma, or perhaps it was his destiny to cross paths with her in this remote location. Maybe she was a blessing from heaven?
“Riding is more of a hobby for me,” he said, feeling the need to clarify it for her.
Keith was always seeking thrills and excitement. He had a passion for speed and loved the exhilaration of riding through the dark night.
Unlike cars on major roads, motorcycles have no speed limit or restrictions. That’s why Keith would often take off down the lonely streets, racing against himself and pushing his limits in the process.
He loved it. He thrived on it. He came here to unwind.
“Well, it’s quite a risky hobby, Mr...”
“Keith,” he replied, offering his name.
She smiled again, and a flutter flew through his chest. “Pleasure to meet you, Keith. I’m Allison.”
His eyes wandered to her lips, thinking they looked ‘sweet,’ but then he quickly shifted his focus back to her captivating gaze.
He asked a question to which he already knew the answer: “Is my bike alright?”
Allison spotted the fragments of his bike scattered on the pavement. She replied with a hint of sarcasm, “Yeah, it’s just got a little scratch.”
He attempted to chuckle at her remark but couldn’t help wincing in pain.
“Don’t force yourself to laugh,” she said sternly. “You probably have internal injuries.”
She was right; even when he was crying, he had felt the excruciating pain.
The siren wailed in the distance, and she finally noticed how tightly she held onto his hand.
“Thank goodness, the ambulance is here.”
Police cars with flashing lights and fire trucks quickly followed.
She began to stand up, ready to let go of his hand and leave him behind.
“Stay with me, Ally,” he pleaded, gripping her hand tightly.
“You’ll be fine, Keith. They’ll take you to the hospital--”
“Then come with me,” he interrupted suddenly.
And in that moment, amidst the chaos and pain, something shifted between them. A connection sparked.
He wanted nothing more than to have her by his side.
She wanted to go with him too.
“I can’t,” she finally said, her voice strained. “I have to be somewhere...for someone.”
Keith couldn’t help but glance at her left hand, specifically the empty ring finger.
“Boyfriend?” he asked.
“No,” she replied simply.
Despite his immense pain and sorrow, Keith couldn’t help but smile with excitement.
“I’ll come find you, Ally,” he said.
Allison stood back to let the paramedics do their job.
After they loaded Kieth onto a stretcher and into the ambulance, the door closed, and Allison watched as it drove away with him inside.
“Keith,” she whispered his name delicately.
