Prologue
“Before we proceed with the verdict, we ask once again. Is the defence aware of the charges levelled against them and the punishment they shall face should they be found guilty?”
“Yes, High Judge”
“And the prosecution understands the nature of the accusation they are making against such a member of our community is highly irregular”
“Yes, High Judge”
“Very well. Now. I ask the jury, who over the last four weeks have heard the countless testimonies and beheld the evidence presented to them by both sides. Have you reached a verdict?”
“I believe we have, High Judge”
“And?”
“We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of all charges”
“Very well. Then it appears we have reached a decision. Mr LaPeritte, you have been found guilty by impartial jury of the crimes of High Treason against the Elder Sanctum, murder of an appointed official and the use of magic restricted under the Twelve Edicts. Do you have any last words on the matter, Mr LaPeritte?”
“I did not murder him!”
“And yet the evidence suggests otherwise and the jury have found you guilty. Mr LaPeritte, I hereby sentence you to a reversal of your Drawing. You will also serve twenty-five years behind bars and will also undergo a Silencing. Guards, take him to his cell and prepare his wards. Court dismissed.”
“Hector! No!”
“Daddy!”
“Moira! I’ll wait for you! Take care of the children!”
“We’ll get you out, my love! I swear!”
“Court is dismissed”
