Nature the Comedian (March 2021)

The commentary:

It seems as if a lot of my ideas this past year were thrown together at red lights or in my spare minutes before work, sitting in my car.

So much of my lyrical work has focused on larger questions … why are we here? Who are we, really? Do we do what we do as the result of some inner ethical compass, or is it societal programming?

But because there all these other things floating around in the air, these odd tangents work their way in. This one ends by asking if our lifespan is what it is largely because of heredity.

The words:

When you have lived

In half-assed service

The heavy hand of nature

Supposed hard-wired

Purpose

When you have lived

For the performance

And the time bomb inside

Why cut the wire

While it’s dormant?

Does this feel like a life?

What’s it to feel like?

To start making sense we must

Decide if this fence should be

Mended

Or should there be a fence at all?

When you have lived

You’ve learned

Of the power of laughing

Even when the joke

Is killing you

Even when the joke

Is killing you
