Chapter 1: Prologue

We thought life was okay, we thought we were at the top of the food chain. That nothing can put us down. We were the the predators, we lived by our own rules.

Oh how wrong we were...

Before we could even comprehend what was happening, we were already so far down on the food chain, that we realise how it feels to be the animals we slaughter and kill to survive. It's horrible, not knowing when or where we will be killed for another species sake.

But I like to think that what goes around comes around. We can't expect to always be on top. We need to be a little fair, and by doing so we need to be alright with offering a few humans as sacrifice. Yes that doesn't sound humane, but why is humane really? Just another word humans came up with to correct their wrong doings.

Now I'm sounding like the species that are putting humans to the brink of extinction. I'm sounding like the vampires.

Oh right, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Marinda Nicolai, and I am part of a family, who is in charge of supplies for us humans, too keep us alive. Some of the people complain that me and my family are working with the vampires to keep their "stock" alive. On the one hand they aren't lying, but on the other we are just trying to help the humans of this town get a little hope.

We are living in a world where humans need to go back to the older ways of living. Farming on our own, making fires to stay warm in the winter, things that modern technology used to do for us. But ever since vampires took over the world, technology was nothing more than a hindrance. Phones were destroyed, electricity was nothing more than a dead give away. It gave of an annoying screech that gave away ones location. Vampires and their enhanced hearing can hear it from a mile away. So humans ultimately gave up on it. We're now back to using the methods we used to read in our history books. Some people easily got the hang of it, while others, well they could still use a bit of extra help.

Me and my family are one of the few families that actually got a chance to live a semi normal life. But at a cost. We need to regularly praise the vampires, show our loyalty and all that stuff you'd usually do for a god. Including offerings. Yeah, we are still part of the life stock in their eyes, but we get a few things others don't. I wouldn't call it special treatment, but others do, so I guess it is.

Well, that's mostly about us humans as live stock. The people really think they have it the worse. Vampires have their own problems as well. And I'm not just saying that because I work for them. I am able to say that because I have seen it first hand.

Vampires have their own class like we used to have. You get the ' lower class ', the ' middle class ' and the ' upper class ' and in some cases the ' royal upper class '. These also apply to the vampires.

The only problem here is the fact that our town, our poor little town, is unfortunately the centre of the land which just so happened to be the best spot for vampire lords. So in a way humans are seen as peasants. My family are what they call slaves while the rest are blood slaves. Blood slaves are, as the title says, only used for their blood. We as slaves are used for different things, what ever the Lord who claimed you chooses.

And our lord, well lords, prefer to use their slaves as house maids and servants. The female humans tend to the female vampires and the male humans tend to the male vampires. There is on certain situations where a male human helps a female vampire or the other way around, but that's only if the other servants are not in the room, or near by. And unfortunately, my luck is so horrible, that I am always stuck tending to the oldest son, Edmund Draven son of Benedict Draven and Willow Draven.

Now I'm not entirely against him, he just sometimes acts younger than he is. I mean his youngest brother acts more mature than him! And that's saying something since the little kid is only 106 years old. Edmund is 125, while both his parents are somewhere round 140. Me? I'm just an average 24 year old girl. Yes girl, my family refuses to let me call myself a women since I'm not out of the house, but like the thing is, I can't go live my life even if I wanted to because well, vampires.

But honestly I can't complain about my idea style up until now. I've been treated kindly and have food and water everyday, including a roof over my head a night. That's better than nothing and I'm glad for it. But honestly it feels like there's something missing in my life, I just don't know what.

"Maybe it's love? You have been going on and on about how you have been working overtime for the prince."

Oh right. I forgot I was in a therapy session with my friend at this run down pub. Surprisingly the vampires allow alcohol, but only on weekends when we're not needed. And today's Sunday, last day to drink our sorrows away. "Listen Christy, I'm sorry I'm complaining, but like, prince Edmund really gets on my nerves sometimes. I try O shrug it off and continue my work but it's as if his sole duty is to annoy me to death" Christy just bursts out laughing, the little- "Hey now, maybe he likes to, and that's why he's pestering you, to get your attention" I gave her a blank stare. "Hell no Christy, if he does, I'd rather let King Benedict send me to the gallows" and I would pray the little runt gets punished for having an attraction to a human. "Woah girl, don't say it with such a straight face, next thing you know, the King might take that as a request."

We continued the rest of the night like that, occasionally sipping on the rum that was offered while bickering away on the most trivial of things. That's how it always goes. And at the end when the clock strikes 10 it's lock up time. We part our ways with a pat on the back and a Goodluck bye. Because honestly, we all need it. Since in two days time, the King will announce the date for the prince's coronation. Oh how the world will end, again.

Yeah, we hated the vampires at the beginning, but we are slowly getting into the way our lives will be, after all it has been three years since the vampires first showed up. And we as humans, prefer not to remember that day...

I went home, no one's awake as usual, went to my room and got ready to have another dreamless night. Although this time... I actually had a dream. The first one in three years.
