The End of the Beginning

His breath was labored. He struggled and fought against the hands that held him. But they held fast, he couldn’t remember a thing.

Betrayed, betrayed.

Words echoed as his head pounded in his skull. Why was he here? Why was this happening?

They’re gone. Gone.

There was a crowd. People chanting, shouting, throwing. What did he do? He couldn’t think. His body hurt, blood clouded bits of his vision.

Framed. Framed.

He could make out something in the distance. The guillotine. Death. Dear god he was going to be beheaded.

Wake up. Remember.

Remember what you did.

The world seemed to slow down. But he couldn’t move an inch. Why? What? Millions of questions ran through his head.

Murderer. Liar. thief.

“I wish you would just die!”

He froze. Time sped back up. He was forced forward. Towards his death. And he didn’t know why. No questions were answered.

Murderer. Liar. thief.

“Why are you here?”

He was forced, no dragged forward. One foot over the other. He almost tripped. But he was kept up. Only held up by the arms that led him forward. He couldn’t even make out their faces.

Murderer. Liar. thief.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

His legs wanted to give. The looming metal only got closer with each step. He wanted to throw up where he stood but his stomach was empty.

Tick. tock.

Time was running out.

Boom. boom. His heart was too loud. Did no one hear it? His head thundered with each step closer.

Why? Why? Why?

That single word repeated in his head. Clouding what thoughts he had. He heard a crack from above but he didn’t bother to look up.

Drip. drip. Drip.

Rain drops began to litter the ground around him. Hitting everything but him. Great. Wash away his blood. The blood of the innocent, the blood of the damned.

Death awaits you.

Death awaits me. Those words wanted to break him. Haunt him almost. But he didn’t have to wait long.

Gorgeous metal, decorated only by scarlet. You would think it was beautiful. If it hadn’t taken so many.

Come.

Let destiny end here.

He put his head through. Finish it. Get it over with. Finally put an end to this mistake.

For a second he looked into the sky. To the rain and dark clouds. Finally peace.

Crash.

But it wasn’t over. Never was it over. And he found that out when he opened his eyes.

You’re not finished yet.
