Chapter 1: The Knocks.
The night was a cold and bitter winter's night I was up as the wind was howling and it kept me up, my family and I are staying in a cabin that is nestled deep in the sticks, and the roads are closed due to the heavy wet snow and freezing wind and chilling temperatures, I got up to go to the fireplace to add more wood and to make me a pot of tea I could tell it was going to be a long night, the wind kicks up more and it started to rattle the windows and made them howl, my feet were cold because I didn't have socks on do to I loosing them in my bed but the fire is so warm and inviting I couldn't help but sit on the old dark blue faux fur rug and pulled a blanket over me and watch the fire crackle and spark and dance on the fresh logs that I threw in.
I was not too fond of this cabin since I was little, the strange things I seen and the unexplained noises I would hear throughout the night, the walls would groan when the wind blew too hard it felt as if we were sleeping in a house made of cards or that we didn't have heat but the fireplace instead. The floors would creak even when no one was walking on them you could hear a faint knock at the back door of our screened-in back porch, that door is always locked when we are not using it yet you can hear someone or something knocking and it doesn't help that the cabin is four hours away from a main road or street, there is nothing but miles and miles of woods and farmlands if there was a problem like a fire or other emergencies you won't get the help fast enough to you that's how far and deep we are in the woods.
I look out the window to see the snow getting close to covering the windows the sinking feeling I had was telling me to go wake up my mom and dad but I know if I did that they would ask why am I still awake at this time of night so I stayed put in my warm little bundle and watch the steam come from the black kettle tea pot that was hanging in the fireplace the water wasn't ready yet so I kept my eye on it and to make sure it didn't wake anyone up when the pot was ready to whistle, I had my cup and my tea bag ready for the boiling water once it started to whistle I quickly got up and put an oven mitt on to get it out of the fire and to pure my water and set the kettle beside the fireplace in a little holder as I sit quietly in the dark living room holding my nice warm cup and slowly sip at my tea I started to hear the knocking again not going to lie it scared the ever loving shit out of me, I looked around to see where it was coming from and I heard it again this time from the front door and we made sure to put heavy chair in front of it, yes that is a very stupid move on our part but the lock was broken and we didn't get time to fix it just yet.
The knocks started up yet again but the howling wind muffled it for once; My heart was racing and I wanted to run but what if someone could see me? What was I supposed to do? Yell "Who's there?" like one of those dumb horror movie tropes? I sat there and stayed quiet hoping who or what was gone so I could move back into my room with my sisters Kelly and Amethyst at least I would have body heat to warm up to but Kelly was letting her inner chainsaw out and Amethyst well she has a full conversation in her sleep, sometimes her conversations get so weird like I mean she would have names, voices and accents for them I kind of started to record her when she sleeps, the saga of Amethyst soap opera.
It's no wonder she says she feels like she hasn't slept as for Kelly she is sawing wood and wakes up refreshed I have no idea how they can sleep in the same room or even in the same bed. Yes, we all share a bed, the girls have one room the boys have theirs, and Mom and Dad have theirs. There is nothing special about it. The beds are like a queen maybe or so?
I looked at the window where the door is and I thought I saw something so I got my ass back into the bedroom and jumped into bed and pulled the covers over me and my pillows over my head and hoped the morning would be a lot better.
