Short Story

“Where are we going?” I asked while he led me by the hand through a row of restaurants. Well, I couldn’t exactly tell since I was blindfolded before we got out of the car; but the walkway smelled of varieties of foods. The sounds of distant chatter and dishes clanking as they were used.

The noise got quieter and quieter until the sounds of chatter and clanking of dishes faded to whispers. The somewhat glow from the sun on my blindfold vanished, I felt a chill go down my spine.

“It’s a surprise! But I know you’ll like it!” He said enthusiastically before I tightened my grip on his hand. “We’re almost there.”

“This is killing me Robert! You know I don’t like when you do this.” I spoke with a high pitched voice, like a little kid. I stomped my feet with every step I took, protesting on letting him blindfold me.

“No point in complaining now, we’re here!” Robert said as he lifted the blindfold off my head to reveal a restaurant that stood before us. It seemed to be some sort of Mexican restaurant, although I couldn’t tell, either the sign was higher above us or it was removed from the establishment.

“Oh… It seems cheap. Was this all a ruse to go to a restaurant you like?” I asked, glaring into Robert’s wood brown eyes, they were as emotionless as ever. Even though his voice sounded like emotion, it was just a ploy so you don’t think he’s a wreck on the inside.

“No-no-no-no you got it all wrong! It’s a really nice restaurant I promise! They’ve got the best bottomless tortilla chips!” He piped up at the thought of the endless free tortilla chips

“Whatever, let’s just go inside.” I responded quickly, shivering in the allies cold air, urging Robert into the building. On the inside the place seemed nicer, there were tables and booths that were spread out from one another.

A lady stood in front of a table, something seemed off about her. The woman’s face was lit with a dark expression masked with hospitality. “Oh! Robert, welcome back and I see you’ve brought your lovely lady along!” The woman said, perking up at the sight of him.

“Well yes, I said I would one day, so here I am. Table for two if you please.” Robert replied, following her to a booth. She then walked away into the darkness of the kitchen.

“Do you know her then?” I crossed my arms and frowned as we sat down.

“Yeah, we’ve known each other for a few years, we just really hit it off when we met.” Robert answered as he looked around the restaurant intently looking for something, or someone. God knows why.

“Hit it off?! What are you, a couple now?!”I glared at him, my eyebrows getting lower as I frowned.

“Woah there! No! I meant as friends! I’d never cheat on you…!”

The woman walked back out and placed a bowl of tortilla chips on the table in between the couple.

“Yeah. Sure.” I pushed the tortilla bowl toward Robert and looked toward the wall, still feeling angry enough to punch a wall.

“Fine! If you don’t believe me then I’ll take her and not you!” Robert stood up abruptly, raising his fist toward my head. Slamming his free fist onto the table, making the chips fly toward the waitress. It seemed like he wasn’t here to take me on a date, he was here to… do something with bad motives. The woman stepped back a couple feet to stay out of his way, smirking as if she’d been a part of it.

“Robert…?! What are you doing?!” I screamed wide eyed whilst staring him in the eyes. I drew my hands up to my face, to hopefully stop him from touching me.

“What I should’ve done a long time ago! I can’t believe you forgot! Hah. I’m not your boyfriend sweetie. I manipulated you into believing you loved me when I kidnapped you 5 years ago!” Robert cackled evilly as he brought his fist closer to my face, time seemed to move in slow motion. His expression was finally showing some color, his eyes turned wide and menacing, his smile bigger than ever.

“W-w-what? No, you didn’t… you’d never!” I replied, my hands shaking violently in front of my face.

“I’ve wanted to lift you from this planet ever since we started this fake relationship. And now I’m gonna do it! I’ve been planning the perfect moment to do so and now there’s no one here to save you princess!” His voice became darker, meaning every word he said, Robert punched me in the face. Time seemed to stop, my mind raced and my vision got blurry.

The next thing I know, I lose my breath one by one and fall limp on the red sofa, Robert’s hands still wrapped around my throat. As I draw my final breath I look up at his hateful wood eyes, taking in every sight before it leaves my body.

Soon everything I know leaves me, now I am nothing.
