The Beginning

Raven’s POV:

“Aaaahhhhh”

That was mom screaming as she continued to push as hard as her body allowed. One second she was screaming like a person who had Klazomania and the next there was pin drop silence meant. Afterall, I was her daughter, Raven Mekus, daughter of the great oracle Margaret Mekus. Without another second, I flung the door open and found what I had expected. My mother was lying on the mattress like a dead corpse. I knelt beside her and looked at the faces of the two nurses. They seemed thunderstruck because of course they didn’t know what had just happened, that mom wasn’t dead, she had just escaped into her world of visions. Their faces reminded me of my own state when I myself saw this happen for the first time.

8 years ago:

It was my third birthday. I lived in Chevre, France. It was 30th October 1980. People were blessed with a certain potential. There were 4 types of potentials:

Elemontials

Warrion

Venomon

Oracle

I was sitting on a mattress with hands joined together and eyes tightly shut waiting for my Potential to surface. In front of me were a jug of water, a lighted candle, a rock, a knife, a bottle of poison and a crystal ball. I had the four elements, a weapon, venom and the ball. Whichever potential I hold should be able to show any change in one of the objects. I had been sitting there for an hour but none of the objects showed the faintest of movement. I was still sitting there when I heard a - BANG!

I was startled. I sprinted towards the area where I assumed the sound came from. Though the house was just a small three room, wooden structure, how fast could I run on those little legs of mine. It took me quite some time before I reached the spot. There I found my mother lying beside the table with a broken vase beside her. My mother must have dropped it while collapsing. I froze there and then, aghast, not understanding what had happened. Understanding started to set in and I was enveloped in anguish. I moved towards her body, not quite able to believe it. I kneeled beside her and called out for her. My mother, a woman with black hair, red ferocious eyes and whitish skin. I resembled her greatly except for the eyes. No one in the state had such red eyes. I had black hair and a darker skin tone. Usually the oracles would speak senseless words during their visions which ensured everyone that they were alive. Here the case was different. Mom would neither show any movement or slip out the slightest sound. So, it was next to impossible to make out if she was still there or picked up forever. Then there was little me who was scandalized to do anything. Oracles like her existed but rare, I barely knew what an oracle was, much less the rare ones. Afterall, how much of the world had I seen in 3 years of my life. I just held her hand tightly in mine. Tears trickled down my cheeks and onto her hand tightly enclosed in mine. I kissed her hand. No longer had my lips left her hand, when she let out a moan and sat up with a jerk. I was astounded and glad at the same time, but my little mind couldn’t comprehend the sudden movement and change of events. Nor did I bother to ask, too blind in the ecstasy of having her back. I just held her hand protectively in mine, in fear of losing her again. That day mother told me about her potential, her vision, and the most important thing, or the only thing that mattered to me, “No one can bring me down, but the death of one of my daughters.” I didn’t quite understand, I didn’t have a sister, but who cares, all I care is that I have my mum back and she’s not going anywhere.

Present:

Since then, I waited for my potential to turn up but none did. Even after 8 years, when nothing surfaced, I admitted that god wouldn’t bless me with any. I was a SIN. That was peculiar because there hadn’t been any SIN for ages. According to history, when a SIN and AVATAR meet, they will make the world a better place. An avatar is the person who’s blessed with all the four potentials. But there hasn’t been a single mother to have had the fortune of bearing one.

Back in the hospital, or I should say a room where mom was giving birth, the nurses couldn’t make out what had happened. Deaths during delivery did happen, sure, but no one died in an instant. Finally, I broke the silence, “She’s not dead.” The words barely left my lips when a deafening shriek filled my ears. My words of course were muffled. Just like the old little me, the nurses were confused too, but instead of wasting their time in sorting their confusion, they quickly got to work. Mom was pushing yet again, she was in blinding agony now, screaming incoherent sentences at her ‘yet to come baby’, it seemed to calm her down so one dared object. After some moments, everything started to shake. Everything went haywire. Damn this day. The wooden walls and the only window in the room developed cracks. The equipment on the table fell. The nurses panicked, but no shock reflected on mom’s face. Guess her vision warned her in advance, but she couldn’t speak due to the pain. No one can blame her for that. Instantly everything stopped shaking and there it was, just like the first dandelion after a harsh winter. Her skin was slightly pink and she had red eyes. The shaking wasn’t an earthquake or the Elemontials would have known, then what was it? The door was flung open again, except that this time, it came out of the hinges. Then there was dad, all sweaty and panting, no doubt it was him who did all the shaking. Afterall, he was a Warrion, with the ability to shake most anything, how was this room supposed to hold? Warriors lose control of their potential when they are overcome with emotions, which is not pleasant, let me clear that. He came running and held the baby up. Strange, the baby isn’t even crying. The baby was a girl. Congratulations dear me, I am a big sister now. Dad didn’t notice the uncanny behavior of my sister and continued to talk to her. It looked like she was interrupted in the middle of a peaceful dream. Oh little sister, welcome to hell, I thought to myself. I think I understood why she didn’t wanna come out. I could almost hear her saying, “Oh will you shut up already. Don’t you know its mean to interrupt a sleep”

This thought almost managed a smile out of me. It is then that I realized that I haven’t smiled for ages. I looked sideways and saw my mom staring at me. Those red eyes seem to pierce right through my soul demanding an answer for an unknown question. I stopped smiling and turned back to usual. When I finally paid attention to what dad was saying, I caught a phrase, “Came with a lot of mess, huh?”

That’s when I looked around and found he was right. The room didn’t look like a room anymore. It was like a garage where you push your unwanted stuff and never bother to give it a second glance. Then he held her high and said, “ARMANDO MEKUS”

“Armando Mekus”, I repeated

“Welcome Armando” I said in my mind
