The Offer
PThe shrill ringing of the alarm clock woke me up and I sleepily reached out to turn it off then rub the sleep from my eyes. It was time to face another day filled with the honking of traffic and coffee after coffee as I searched tirelessly for a job and I wasn’t looking forward to that. On the bright side at least I got an interview for a waitressing job at some fancy restaurant I thought to myself as I got out of bed and stumbled into the tiny bathroom for I needed a cold shower or else I was going back to sleep. You might be thinking about how I was out of a job in the first place; well you see I had a job a great one that I loved I used to work as a teacher for an elementary school and yes I do love kids, but then this child her name was Emily she was the sweetest and one day she showed up to school without any lunch and you want to know what I did I helped her I bought her a chocolate bar and chips and fruit juice and you want to know what happened I got fired why? turns out Emily had just forgotten her lunchbox at home and her mother couldn’t leave work to carry it to her at school and Emily was allergic to nuts yes allergic meaning she started choking and gasping for breath and had to be rushed to the hospital all because of me. Yes, I felt terrible, but how was I supposed to know she was allergic and besides I was only trying to help, but story short they sack me and I never saw Emily again which was for the best I suppose.
I turned on the shower and gasp as the cold water sprayed out of the showerhead onto my body full force washing away the sleepiness that I felt and by the time I was finished I felt refreshed, but still not ready to face the day but it had to be done if I planned to earn some money so I could at least keep the roof over my head because my rent was due in the next two weeks and I did not have the money and my landlord Mr. Vicks may be nice, but he only gives one chance and I already used up mine. I grabbed my coffee and was about to head out the door when my phone rang and I took it out of my handbag to answer it. “hello?” I said into the phone . “good morning Miss Mason this is Mr. Francis’s assistant speaking. Mr.Francis would like to notify you that the job offer that was open is now closed as he has found someone else to fill the opening and would also like to apologize for the inconvenience” a man informed me and I almost spilled my coffee in shock ” but...but ... but I really need this job. if you could please talk to Mr.Francis ask him to give me a chance I am sure I can prove myself to him” I stuttered in desperation but the assistant wasn’t having it” listen we are really sorry, but the opening is now closed ” he said and the line went dead and I dropped my bag onto the kitchen floor and leaned against the counter holding my head in my hands.
Another failed opportunity I thought to myself if only a miracle could happen. I was interrupted by the ringing of the doorbell and my heart rate increased thinking it was my landlord early to collect rent, but it was only the newspaper boy that delivered the local newspapers to every house in the community and I opened the front door to pick up the newspaper that was on my porch and then closed it. I decided that since My interview was canceled I was just going to have to browse the newspapers and see if there were any jobs available and so I did that. I was about to put it aside in failure of finding anything and that’s when I saw the opening for a bartender at a very expensive club judging by the ratings and the prices and though it wasn’t my style I decided to try it for it was better than nothing and at least it paid which was all that mattered and so I called and a male voice answered ” hello this is Mr.Jaxon speaking assistant of Mr.Stone how may I help you?″ he asked and I said ” I saw the add of a job opening for the position of a bartender and I was wondering if I could get an interview?″ I asked and the man went silent then said ” you don’t sound like a bartender, but sure Mr.Stone would be happy to interview you. how does tomorrow morning at 8:30 sound?″ and I replied, ” perfect I will see you then”, but the man said, ” wait I didn’t get your name !” ” It’s Elizabeth Mason ” and with that said he ended the call and I sigh hoping with all my heart that I get the job.
